Think they've gone for a "soft launch" rather than getting the press in for publicity only for things to go butt-over-bosom.

Given the various issues encountered by several recent new fleets, this was probably a wise decision!

Just started moving now, 16.5 late. A lot of trains have been delayed around there for some reason.

Freight in front caused a route setting defect. Essentially we had to pass two signals at danger.

The MK5s won't run on Fridays for the time being. Just at York btw ✌

Friday has nothing to do with any plan. 7 days in traffic, 3 days out. It’s all based around the training plan.

———

In relation to the “in service officially” comment, Nova 3 is not classed as “in service” until it works regular diagrams on a permanent basis which is not the case as this entry is tied directly to the training plan.

There will be a launch in the future but it’s not Monday and there will need to be more than one Nova in traffic.

I believe the sets were swapped for a fault yesterday and obviously someone has miscalculated...

More teething problems then. Perhaps a good thing that there wasn't a blaze of publicity around the new launch because running out of fuel on the first day is something that would make embarrassing news headlines.

I’m pretty sure they sound the same as they do on Chiltern and ScotRail services. The same as they sounded on Northern and Greater Anglia services. The same as they sound on freight and have done on Nova 3 test and crew training runs for the past 360 days. Can we get over the fact they are loud now? Please.

I think we need two threads.

In one, people can wibble away about seat alignment and legroom.

On the other people can rave about the thrash and end each post with 'My Lords!' or 'Dreadful!'.

Then we'll all be happy.

More usefully, let's have a third: about when the trains are actually being introduced into regular service (rather than being taken away for secure storage) and other services are being worked by doubled-up DMUs, then we shall know when it is safe to try to use the "services" to cross the Pennines without the risk of being left behind (again)...

You could probably have separate threads on seat alignment, legroom, air conditioning, seat covers, seat colour, colour of the fonts used on the PIS, accent used on the automated announcements, type of tea served onboard.... :D

Seriously though, its just nice to see the first of the 68 / MKVs out there giving passengers a bit more room. Which is after the most important facet of these units.

People will be rose tinted about these new trains just because they have a loco on one end but I'm unimpressed. Air con ineffective, window alignment one of the worst I've come across and barely any airline seats.

There's something about CAF and bad window alignment, isn't there? There is barely a single bay in the Class 195s that aligns properly. It's outrageously lazy and sloppy, as a few minor tweaks would fix it.

The only CAF units which will have good window alignment are the WCML units.

Because that is what most people prefer, especially on longer journeys. People who like to hide from the world in an airline seat and pile their belongings on the seat next to them to keep all strangers at bay should consider whether public transport is right for them.

I'd say there is a mix of preferences for seating arrangements, hence why I think the Class 158 as-built layout, which alternates bays with pairs of airline rows, is about as perfect a layout as you can have on any Standard class rolling stock. 100% window aligned, too.

At Leeds currently

'Platform 16, for the 1905 service to Manchester Victoria, via Manchester Victoria...'

You do get that where a train terminates short at its via point, I've seen it a few times. You have to manually remove the via point. I think the one I saw was "Birmingham New St via Birmingham New St" for a Scotland to Euston via Brum that was being terminated short due to severe delay.

No, if you don't like it, please feel completely free to move along.

But for those a bit more old school, enjoy:)

Stunning video, stunning sound. I doubt the Holgate area has heard anything quite like that since late 1981....

Iam surprised, on the inside barely tell the difference between a mark 5A and an 800?

Nice to see it running now though, anyone know where they gonna start running next after Liverpool - Scarborough?

Manchester - Middlesbrough, if memory serves from earlier posts.

The air conditioning all seems to be at the window with no roof mounted airflow. Time will tell whether this is effective.

The blanket of air flowing upwards from under the windows has a sort of reduction effect of the heat from the sun through the windows.

The above means that the HVAC system is under the floor, meaning the roof is higher in the passenger saloon and hence larger overhead luggage storage.

Officially in passenger services. Liverpool-Scarborough today.
'
Not 'officially' in service - as they are not diagrammed. They will run if a competent guard and driver are available for the FULL diagram.

Thought so. @BMIFlyer said they were not 'officially' in service yet. How many are in service?

Correct, they aren't officially launched by TPE yet. That is in September when more enter traffic. So, I am correct with what I previously wrote. ;)

Nice to see someone who actually agrees with me. Thanks! :E

No sleep the night of operations, and not helped by some Herbert kicking over my coffee at Victoria!
A good mornings sights and sounds and many more to come.

The height of the ceiling is great for me, loads of room. My head is touching on a Pendo. I think the vandal community will have a lot of fun shoving stuff through those grills.

Surely the Mk5s were procured to speed-up capacity increase on the core routes over the pennines. And now we are to understand that priority is being given to introduction of the 802s.

Yes, everyone knows how 'hellishly' complex everything the introduction of new rolling stock is, eg getting the Stadler 68s to communicate with the CAF Mk5s. But such issues should have been anticipated (given how complex everyone knows things to be), and their resolution recorded within the contracts with CAF. And if it wasn't possible to resolve these issues prior to contracts being signed, perhaps it's not that surprising it's taking quite a while to resolve them subsequently. Either way, by any reasonable measure the 'gamble' by TPE management to get the Mk5s into squadron service ahead of the 802s has not paid off - and I'd say a significant root cause was pressing on with the project without first having obtained sufficient contractual obligations, eg between Stadler and CAF. Given the complexity, no crystal ball should have been required to see how the Nova3 project would go without these commitments in place.

I have watched every youtube video i can find from yesterdays events. Very excited to see them finally in action!.. And yes im fully a fan of the noise they make :D. I would hope that any of the tpe drivers would have their windows open on the loco when powering up in Standedge tunnel!

Many thanks. I think today has revived a youthful spirit in quite a few of us!

Indeed! As one who was, shall we say, less than impressed when the loco hauled turns on the north Trans Pennine route were turned over to 150/2's, I was rather happier to be sat on a loco (propelled) train yesterday with said "thrash" being concentrated in one place, not underneath my seat!
