The plans to rebuild the concourse and retail facilities at Queen Street were 'announced' by the government in June 2009 as reported by the BBC (and have been since repeated). But we have to be very careful how we read these 'announcements'. When Network Rail were interviewed the following day, the response was "
only confirm it was looking at platform expansion. . . . . As part of the Edinburgh and Glasgow improvement programme we are examining how capacity at Glasgow Queen Street could be enhanced.
The options under consideration include lengthening some existing platforms and creating an additional platform by utilising the current car parking space. This project is at an early stage and many elements, including funding, have yet to be finalised."
The full programme of proposals are known as EGIP (Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme) and can be seen here:-
Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme.
The EGIP programme, is out for consultation at present, and even mentions 'capacity improvements' at Queen Street, but there is no specification for the movement of platforms further into the station (which could accommodate longer trains). The Network Rail media announcement can be read here:-
NETWORK RAIL ANNOUNCES GLASGOW QUEEN STREET DEVELOPMENT PARTNER
Extracts state "
passengers will benefit from an extended concourse", "
a world-class integrated transport hub" and "
cementing Glasgow’s position as the top retail and leisure destination outside London".
But when it comes to discussion of extending the platforms, here is the actual wording : "
also making provision for potential capacity expansion at the station."
I don't read "
making provision for a potential capacity expansion" as "
expansion". I do read it as a means to provide retail growth for the developers Land Securities and Henderson Global.
Glasgow City Council responded to the consultation in these terms :
Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme
You'll see that the City is more concerned that the chord proposed for Garngad has been dropped, which will require trains between Falkirk and QueenStreet via Cumbernauld to reverse at Springburn. In respect of Queen Steet, they merely state that the City "
Welcomes proposals for capacity improvements at Queen Street High Level station".
