I can only advise keeping an eye on their website and/or giving them a call, I have no inside knowledge or contacts within DBS.

    Pay to train

Another considertion is that when undertaking a 'career change' later in life, mid 40's for example, it's extremely unlikely that one will ever end up as a captain, certainly not for a major airline. Be lucky to get a FO job with a major too. I looked at it as an option: a year of training...

    Pay to train

I rang DBS in Doncaster about a week ago on behalf of a friend who is interested in becoming a train driver having followed a similar career to myself in the RAF. I had pointed him in their direction prior to my call only to find the facility missing from their website. Whether it puts one...

    Pay to train

DB Schenker might be re-introducing their private driver assessment days in the new year. Not exactly a short cut to a job, but at least you will find out if you have the aptitude, and (if you pass) you won't necessarily have to go through the entire assessment phase with whichever TOC you apply...

    New to all this...

Judging by some of my colleagues I'm not sure physical fitness is a prerequisite!

    New to all this...

£24K at FGW. Plus a bit of overtime through training too. ~7% salary sacrifice for the pension leaves you circa £22K (+overtime) gross. Most of us on the course I'm on have averaged 5hrs overtime a week throughout training, plus the odd Sunday once the handling phase starts (min. 8 hrs = ~£132...

    Application forms and a CV??

The initial post specifically mentioned that an opportunity to attach a CV/covering letter existed. Therefore, in doing so it would not be a case of submitting something that could lead to rejection simply by the fact of being present.

    Railway jobs and inflation

Certainly hope so. Not sure with their current two drivers mind. Might have to wait until '15 for a real shot at both championships.

    Railway jobs and inflation

Can't comment on any other TOCs or positions in the industry, but 5.5%, 3.7% & 3.2% for FGW drivers over the last three years seems pretty damn good. The military have had 0%, 0% and 1.5% in the same time period.

New to rail industry Union help

Like I said, I will be joining; I used the phrase '...subscription for a lawyer...' as a catch-all phrase for the protection that you outline. I would be happy, of course, if the sole focus of the union was to protect their members and secure fair deals on pay and conditions, that is my opinion...

New to rail industry Union help

Does ASLEF, or RMT for that matter, make a contribution to labour party funds? And if so is it possible to opt out? Quite frankly I'd be happy to stay well away from the unions, especially looking at aslef's campaign section. I just think of it as a ~£27 per month subscription for a lawyer, in...

First Great Western - Trainee Drivers

Always dress to impress. Suit, tie, no creases, polished shoes. Should be bloody obvious when trying to get a job.

    Need Help with Job Interview

One could always try googling 'railway rule book'...

Am I realistically too old for a tainee drivers job !?!

Of ten people on my course two people were aged 46 at its commencement, one aged 49.

First Great Western - Trainee Drivers

I think that course will be taught by an instructor with the initials 'P.K.', an all round excellent chap.

    Colour blindness test

Ahh, just had a re-read on the RNIB website, to register as blind it's 3/60 when corrected so hopefully you should be ok.

    Colour blindness test

3/60 seems, well frankly, really bad. Any worse and one could register as blind. Not really what one wants in the driving cab.

Is there any truth that the national standard for train driver tests are changing?

Presumably a 'practice pack' will be sent out to all those who's applications make it through the first sift. That will be sufficient, as indeed it was before.

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

Well, you're entitled to an opinion, just as I am entitled to mine. You're also entitled to use poor spelling and grammar, if you think it helps.
