LNER to pilot removal of Off-Peak tickets

In my experience, many of the seats not described as 'Limited window view' are still poorly placed for people who want to enjoy the landscape rather than their phone!

LNER to pilot removal of Off-Peak tickets

Unless I've missed it, the LNER PDFs don't show you where the windows actually are, do they?

Travelling to Gatwick on 30 January

In case anyone's interested, we got to Victoria at 0944 (having been lucky with the Central line!), obviously missed the 0945, but there were no queues and we had a coach to ourselves on the 1000. After seeing my wife off at Gatwick, I caught the 1146 back to Victoria, for which there was a...

Travelling to Gatwick on 30 January

Thanks! Looks like it's going to be do-able, then. Did you get away on the train you expected, or did you have to wait for a later one?

Travelling to Gatwick on 30 January

I have to get to Gatwick Airport on 30 January, by around 1100. Southern are advertising a 15-minute interval shuttle on that day. Did they run something similar on previous strike days? (I can't remember.) Would it be foolish to rely on that?

    St Pancras before HS1

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that!

    Prettiest Stations in the UK

Forsinard. Though it might have changed a bit in the forty years since I last passed through there!

    Ticket stamp ink

If I can find the ones in my attic I'll try to check whether they're ink or carbon! Mine are just the ribbons, as supplied by the BR stationery stores. They are in foil or cellophane wrappers. We didn't need to change the ribbons very often, but, when we did, I don't recall it being a...

    Ticket stamp ink

I haven't used a date press since around 1987, when my booking office went over to APTIS, so my memory could be a bit defective, but I believe that the ribbons were impregnated with carbon, like a typewriter ribbon, rather than inked. I appreciate that's not much help to GWVillager, though. I...

Pajares tunnel [ES] open for passenger services 30/11/2023

That's a shame. I rode the line over the pass back in 2019, and I was hoping to return sometime next year to do it again. But I don't need to go all the way to Spain to sit on a train in a tunnel!

Pajares tunnel [ES] open for passenger services 30/11/2023

Does this mean the end of the spectacular broad gauge line over the Pajares pass?

Examples of services which might benefit from being Clockface

For me... the Greenford branch (with tighter connections onto the eastbound Elizabeth line at West Ealing), and local stations between Marylebone and High Wycombe.

Bergen line on FIP: reservations compulsory?

I suggest you contact Vy (https://www.vy.no/en/customer-service/form/tickets-and-travel-info) - they were very helpful, in English, when I raised a query about travelling on the Bergen line. They do seem to understand FIP; I'm retired so now only get a 50% discount rather than a coupon, but they...

Things we don't see at stations these days

More likely to have been Wethered's of Marlow, who were bought out by Strong's in the early 1960s (I think), and thereafter used similar signage. Both breweries later shut by Whitbread, of course.:(

    Widened Lines

It survived until the early 60s, at least, albeit completely disused. It would be interesting to know when the last train ran over it. The trackless viaduct survived for a few more years until it was demolished to make way for Westway.

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

Killjoy! I'm quite partial to a spot of lollygagging at stations :D

    FEVE Network Ferrol to Oviedo-Gijon

When I did the Ferrol line a few years ago, we broke our journey at O Barqueiro on the way back to Gijon. Lovely little place, like a Cornish fishing village!

British Rail ticketing before Oyster PAYG

At Kensington Olympia, we had pre-printed Edmonson card tickets to places like Watford Junction, Harrow & Wealdstone and Bushey & Oxhey; all were routed 'Earl's Court & Warwick Avenue'. I remember getting into an argument with someone who stated they were travelling to Watford Junction via...

    Examples of bad design

The on-train washbasins (I forget which units they're in) that disable the tap until you've pressed the soap button, so you can't check that there's actually any water in them. To add insult to in jury, the soap doesn't come out underneath the soap button, as you'd expect, but beside the tap...
