    FIP Card

Correct on all accounts. Through fares to Europe are not subject to PRIV discounts as they are not "Anytime" tickets. Eurostar has to be booked as one journey using your FIP card and these fares are set at a constant FIP rate on a first come first serve limited number per train basis. FIP...

    Transpennine Student Offer

Just spotted an advert on Facebook offering 50% off Transpennine fares for students. http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/tickets/students/?1222800827 I've not bothered reading the details as I'm not a student any more, nor do I have a 16-25 railcard. But thought it might be of interest to some...

    Priv Questions

Yes provided they're under 25, living at home and earning under a certain amount per week IIRC. I thought it was 50 hours (22:00 the previous night to 23:59 the next day)?

When did travelling by rail become so expensive.

I'll have a better idea of what I'm doing nearer the time, so might be able to book a couple of AP tickets or come back same day and split the ticket. It'd be nice to just be able to book 1 reasonably priced ticket that was semi-flexible though.

When did travelling by rail become so expensive.

Well until a few years ago I had a PRIV, so was used to fairly cheap fares (although sometimes they were often a bit more expensive than AP, albeit lot more flexible). Since they I've found myself travelling by train less and less as I either have to commit myself to particular trains in...

When did travelling by rail become so expensive.

I've just gone onto the National Rail website to check the price of a return from Newcastle to Leeds (out on a Saturday and returning on Sunday). It had a think for a while and came back with a price of £13.00. Seems quite reasonable, however that is for two advance single which is no good for...

How do you buy advance tickets online?

Advance tickets are sold as two singles rather than a return. I'm not familiar with the SWT booking system, but usually when you get the list of fares it's possible to click something like "show singles" which shows any available advance tickets.

    Priv Questions

I think I said earlier in this thread that I've had hotel accommodation provided when missing a connection due to a delay. I'm not sure what the official stance is, but I doubt they would refuse to do anything. Presumably if you were stuck at Stockport there would be other passengers in a...

    ALR Trip Help & Advice

I did a couple of years ago. Was on a train to London from Paignton which was cancelled at Westbury (there was no replacement guard at Exeter so the original one agreed to take the train forward to Westbury where he'd be over hours. The replacement guard taxied from Bristol wasn't passed on...

    Mini ALR Help and Advice

Yeah, it's not the easiest place to get to by train. I've just looked at times and I think it'd just be possible to do in a day, getting the 0554 from Buxton to Malton, bus to Pickering, NYMR to Grosmont with 40ish minutes to look around, and then train to Whitby. Coming back would be via...

    Mini ALR Help and Advice

I think Betws-y-Coed - Whitby - Buxton in a day might be pushing it a bit  Whitby is a nice place though, the 199 steps up to the Abbey are always good exercise too!

    Mini ALR Help and Advice

If you fancied something different you could get a bus to Llanberis and have a trip on the Snowdon mountain railway (they do PRIV rates). Then depending on times either get the bus back to Betws-y-Coed or up to Bangor for the train back to Buxton. It'd be probably worth having a different plan...

    Evening fares

Last week I needed to travel from Newcastle to Hexham. As I knew that I would be driving back I only needed to buy a single ticket. When I went to buy my ticket from the machine at Newcastle I was presented with two choices. A standard day single for £5, or an evening cheap day return for...

    GNER £5 tickets

Particularly on runs beyond Leeds/Newcastle fuel becomes an issue. Also, certain stock might have to finish at a certain depot to get the correct maintainence at the end of the night, which is more important than reservation labels really. GNER have had quite a few trains fail on running out of...
