Noticed something rather unusual this evening, which did at least take my mind off the debacle at the weak beer stadium tonight: a Northern 158 arrived at Huddersfield from the Leeds/Bradford direction, which I assumed was going to be my train home. Upon my arrival on P4 all doors were closed but active, and I noticed the unit was coupled to a 142. I was about to board when a Northern member of staff approached me and asked where I was headed. When I said Batley, he told me this was the Manchester Victoria service and that the Leeds stopper would be arriving shortly. AIUI 158s don't normally work West of Huddersfield, so I'm now wondering why this one was being sent West. Is there any maintenance work that can be carried out at Newton Heath (or Allerton) that can't be done at Neville Hill, or is this in fact a regular positioning move for tomorrow's early Calder Valley services that I was somehow unaware of?
