The late trains are bad enough on a friday night, with one or two exceptions, with steamers, smokers, and those folk who think its funny to ask for a half to X. Late trains? No thanks.

well if its one train to one destination, why not just barrier the train to make sure everyone has a ticket before boarding

but that was the first thing that came to my mind

But GQS is totally barriered, and Waverley is barriered for the bay platforms the service usually terminates in. So why, and indeed how, are people buying tickets on board?

Only explanation I can think if is passengers changing without going through the barrier, but won't apply to many at that time.

Frankie Boyle talks about how he once watched Rangers and Celtic fans 'line up' for a fight in Ayr station after coming off the last train.

Waverley is barriered for the bay platforms
However, the barrier is not entirely complete
If you walk down the "long platforms" you can then walk round the barrier!
Equally, I have seen some people arrive on the train then walk round the barrier
Thus the barrier is pointless

Indeed, which gets closed at night.

There's no longer the loop down one ramp and back up the other anymore for dropping off either.

You can only get round at the end of platform 11 and 12 now, the gap by the end of 18 got fenced off last year.

The end of 11 and 12 is covered by CCTV though, and has a passengers must not cross this line sign on the platform 12 side of the fence a few feet back from the end.

I was thinking more of the Central to be honest.

That would be ideal, and it used to happen regularly.

Most people in Edinburgh can afford a single to Haymarket to get through the barrier, just like people in Glasgow will just buy a single to high street to get them through! (Maybe even a child one the barrier can't tell!)

you can barrier the platform with staff surely, certainly at GLC they can, I remember many regular ticket checks that worked that way in my time, though that was mainly arrivals.

if the last train on a friday from glasgow to ayr is anything to go by its the mordor express, no sign of a conductor, generally and not a pleasant experience.

Done that train to get to Prestwick for an early flight and didnt find it scary in fact opposite . Its the Glasgow Buses which are a lot worse than any train.

One of my gripes about Citylink is that they dont serve Edinburgh Airport. I used to have get the express bus in to town to a roundabout on the outskirts of Edinburgh to pick up the Fort William bus (fortunately there was a macdonalds for breakfast).
Sadly the Fort William bus has gone so fly to Inverness now.

I find it odd that many buses don't serve the airport to be honest I don't know if it is a case of BAA charging them too much for the honour or if the operators consider the time penalty too much. Even the local buses don't bother! Places like Stirling, Dundee, Linlithgow (or anywhere to the North or West of Edinburgh have to either drive or double back which is not ideal!)

I would be good to see some more buses looping around the airport, I know when the tram is working it may not be as bad for many, but that is still someway off an people would probably still prefer a direct bus to changing onto a tram.

Back to Edinburgh - Glasgow.
I find it difficult to see a 24 hour demand, but I also find it hard to know where the line should be drawn. a 0030 service in both directions would have a lot of customers but the train will probably not be that nice afterwards and the depot staff will need to put a lot of work in to bring it back into a standard to carry passengers the next day.

To me the big missing point is an earlier departure in the morning, say 0450 so people can get the 0550 Edinburgh - KX service. I have used the first trains each directions and they are not badly loaded by the time they get to Linlithgow and Croy. Once Eureka comes also I hope the Scotrail timetable see's some adjustments to make use of the improvements on the ECML. For example the current first train from Stirling arrives at Waverley at 0624, which would be too late for the 0625 proposed service to Kings Cross. Lets hope Scotrail can move the service so it arrives at 0615 instead!

Actually the barriers should be able to tell the difference between a Adult ticket and a Child ticket depending on the setup the Operator has chosen, for example with the FCC gatelines you can tell the system to set off a alarm when a child ticket is used, the barriers simply don't accept the ticket and a manual check is done.

These apply to just the FCC gatelines but I'm quite sure equally apply to any regardless of location or operator.
