Where will the West Midlands Railway 153s be going? Understand they will receive 172s by December timetable to replace them?

The 172s are the London Overground ones, which are going to need to have toilets fitted so it'll partly depend how quickly London Overground release them and how quickly they can be modified.

West Midlands are also supposed to receive 3 x D-Trains to replace the 150s which are due to transfer to Northern. Northern had expected the 150s last year so it possibly explains why they are taking on some 153s despite the plans to release all their 153s next year.

The 170s are going to Northern. It won't create a common fleet at all for EMT, who aren't due to take over either of those routes soon, certainly not within the timescale of the 170s being released from Scotrail.

Indeed. The first set of 170s have already been released and are due to enter passenger service with Northern next month. Can't see Stagecoach wanting to pay to train crews on a new class of train unless it's unavoidable.

Pretty sure it's 172s to WMR from July and timetable in December. So whether this would free up their 153s to go to ScotRail maybe?

I can’t see the 172’s moving to WMR in July. What would happen to the goblin until the new 710’s are built?

The first 710 for the GOBLIN is already built and being tested. The first one is due to enter service in May.

Optimist! As far as I'm aware, only 2 units have escaped from Litchurch Lane - one to Old Dalby and the other to Northern France! I think the odds of seeing one delivered to London, the necessary staff trained up on them, and a passenger service being run with one, within the next 40 days, is slim.

They MIGHT just deliver one to depot for THIS May. Then follows route clearance trials, driver and artisan training, etc. Let me stick my neck out (from experience) and I will say this October for public in-passenger service running (does not include launches and press runs). Time will tell.....

Don't know much about this but someone told me last week some 365s are to be put on standby for use where the overground 172s are coming from to fill the gap.

According to the latest RAIL Magazine edition Porterbrook are planning to use their 153's as "capacity busters" by inserting them in existing 150's or 156's for additional seating and bike or luggage storage. GA and WMT ones are being looked at first, followed by ATW,EMT,GWR and Northern. Porterbrook claim their 153's are in "good condition".

That sounds like it would need one or two new class numbers given 153s aren't cleared for some routes which 150s and 156s are cleared for.

Looks like Porterbrook have been reading some of the threads on here.

They’re (WMT) in better condition than the AGA 153’s that’s for sure.

Like a different unit

Apart from Northern, are there any 153/156 operators who could release 156s with appropriate plates to enable permanent 3 car sets. EMT are an option.

Greater Anglia surely?

Double up the 153’s and remove the bogs. The other PRM work needed can’t be that extensive.

Most reliable thing British Leyland built. Not that that is a ringing endorsement!

Surely not GA, as they are aiming for a completely brand new fleet.

5x 153s are coming next summer according to this article in The Scotsman.

To save others the pain of having their browser grinding to a halt by visiting the Scotsman website:
Britain’s first rail carriages reserved for bikes and outdoor equipment are to run on one of Scotland’s busiest tourist lines from next summer, The Scotsman has learned. An extra coach is expected to be coupled to ScotRail trains to ease overcrowding on the West Highland Line between Glasgow, Oban, Fort William and Mallaig. A similar experiment may be tried on lines between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh and Wick. Transport minister Humza Yousaf said the Scottish Government’s Transport Scotland agency was finalising work with ScotRail to secure five single-carriage class 153 trains. These will be reconfigured to accommodate cyclists and their bikes, and other outdoor sports fans and equipment. Such changes to “maximise the experience and efficiency from a cyclist’s perspective” will be discussed with interested groups. Mr Yousaf said: “It is our aspiration the first dedicated carriage for cyclists and other sports enthusiasts will enter service by summer next year. This unique initiative, a UK first, is supporting improved transport connectivity and active travel choices. “It also brings benefits to local economies, tourism, the nation’s health and the environment.” A Transport Scotland spokesperson added: “This will very much be a trial, and help to inform the future rolling stock requirements, so the Scottish rail fleet can support growing cycle tourism sector over the next 30 or 40 years.” A ScotRail spokesperson said: “We’re looking forward to working with our key partners on how we can boost tourism and bring wider economic benefits, along Scotland’s most scenic railways.”Frank Roach, partnership manager of the Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership co-ordinating body, said: “Cycle tourism is growing in our area and the train is a great way to get to the start of your ride.” Ian Budd, convener of the Friends of the Far North Line, said: “It is always difficult for train operators to find a balance between providing cycle accommodation and maximising space for passengers, including those with reduced mobility, and this idea neatly solves the problem. “The line is very popular with cyclists touring the area and taking the John O’ Groats to Land’s End challenge.”

This is great news!

Finally a change in thinking!

I hope they do make proper use of these, maybe a microbuffet to replace the daft trolley?

I assume the 153s are to be additions to the current capacity so Oban becomes a 3 car set & Fort Bill/Mallaig a 5 car set.

If so, does that mean the 2 services will become completely separate & does the WHL line have the capacity to cope?

Random person who happened to read the Scotsman one day: Where will I put my cricket bat?
Conductor: Over there. *points at the wall*
Random person: That's not a cricket bat holder.
Angry conductor: We don't HAVE a cricket bat holder.
Random person: Well I might have misunderstood something but the Scotsman said so!
Angry conductor: You misunderstood.

Good question, there can't be many platforms on the way to Crianlarich that will fit what is an 8 coach Sprinter.

I would like to see the services split personally, 30 years down the line and it still creates confusion.

So will the 153s be attached to 156s, or will they be attached to 158s which will limit the 158s to 75mph?

158s won't be doing over 75 on the WHL anyway, if and when they finally end up there.....fours years after the franchise started.

It is quite a unique situation. I've always wondered whether new-build stock could incorporate modular aspects to its design. Maybe half of a carriage that could converted to carry luggage and bicycles in the summer and during holidaymaker periods, and have racks and tip-up seats removed and replaced with seats in the winter.
There's a lot less passenger traffic in the winter, so I doubt that would be worthile - adding on bicycle storage just for the summer probably minimises the average length of train / average fuel usage (i.e. shortest train possible in winter, expand for summer by adding extra carriages - as opposed to more empty seats for the same length of train in the winter).

Especially with cantilever seats, conversion should be quite simple - but probably not worth the effort.
