Any idea how to answer the overview questions like why do you want this job? Interview on Thursday, maybe trying to look too much into it.

Thanks

be honest is the best answer, if you want the job for the right reasons then you’ll be grand.... there is no “right answer” so to speak, they want to hear about you and why you find the role interesting above all others and why you have chosen to apply for the job.

Just going through my starters pack. In terms of pension, is seems CARE is the way to go. I just wandered if most people also opt in to SMART? It seems worthwhile but wandered if there were any drawbacks that i'm overlooking?

Thanks

As long as you sign up for the first five years of service it doesn’t really matter, upon your 5th year you can transfer into the Network Rail Rail Pension Scheme section. The RPS is one of the best pension schemes still open to new starters, retire at 65 or 40 years service on a final salary.

As far as I can tell, SMART allows NR to take out your pension contributions out of your salary before you are taxed as so saves you some money on terms of National Insurance contributions and does the same for NR. I worked out that it will save me around £300 a year although the amount depends on how much you earn of course. It's a bit like a salary sacrifice scheme.

I've opted in as I couldn't see any reason not to!

Hi I've also being going through the starter pack and in terms of pension, the care scheme being a defined benefit is a far better option than the DC option. It's an absolute no brainer.

I also opted for the CARE pension as this seems the better pension choice for myself. Can I ask regarding SMART, I was led to believe that this would automatically be applied as soon as you start working for NR. Did you have to send a form into NR to opt in for the SMART arrangement?

Just checked as I weren't sure either. Don't have to do anything. All new employees are automatically enrolled into smart. So all good.

I did mine this week - basically you're not expected to know anything about signalling so can't be marked down on that. You'll be given a brief beforehand which you must read (I printed mine out so I could refer to it) and then a few scenarios and given time to think about what you'd do, then answer on camera. Best of luck :)

I've had my interview today for the North and East section intake, so all I can do now is cross my fingers. Big thank you to everyone that has (ever!) contributed to this thread, I went back and read the whole thing which was really helpful, I would strongly recommend that and making notes from it to anyone applying.

Good luck, hope it went well and you get a good result from it. Having done one full read-through of this thread I think i'm going to wait until I get an interview before embarking on the next voyage through - particularly as it's now over 300 pages of gold!

Do Crossing keepers at TVSC also get compulsory Sunday OT and the same shift enhancement as signallers?

Considering putting an application in.

Thank you - It's a lot of pages but well worth it, lots of really helpful information, and having examples for the 8 NTS is truly the best advice I can give. :)
