I am off to crew in the morning (Sat 23.7.2011) with RailUK member atsf ft and an old friend for the day!!

Apart from DMU's and EMU's what are we lightly to in in the way of locos hauled workings?

I have taken the advantage of booking with London Midland of line for the 50% off. 3 tickets from Sandwell and Dudley return for £30.15.

Not Bad I hear you say!!!!!!!!

You should see the Cl 57 coupling to the pendo [0850 ex Euston] for the Holyhead drag [dep. Crewe 1043], and if you're still there in the afternoon, see it uncouple on its arrival back about 1645.

What Welshman said

You may also see 221144 there which has been parked in Platform 8 for a few weeks (unless they've shifted it since)

I have heard there is a daily freight which goes through Crewe for a driver change, but it may be weekday and I don't know much else apart from that I'm afraid

The two-car VV wasn't there on Friday. There also used to be a 57 in front if it on occasions...

On your return, split your journey (check ticket validity) at Stafford and spend a few hours there
You may then get some of the freight that you would otherwise miss
After about 20:00 the freight almost falls to nil on a Saturday night, by then most of the southbound freight has passed

On 3/10/64, me and my mate Les went from Dewsbury, via Guide Bridge/Sockport for a day trainspotting at Crewe.
From Stockport we had a Blue Electric and 12 Mk1's to Crewe.
On arrival we managed to get round 5B( Crewe South Shed) where I saw Dymock Grange.
Then up to 5A.
In the half round house was Scots, Duchess, Brits, and Duke of Goucester parked up rotting away.
This was the time when all the big engines had yellow bands on the cabs. This was in effect a ban on big steamers going South of Crewe.
At 1400 hrs we went to Crewe Works, and went round the works.
There we saw some Westerns in the paint shop numbers D1060 to 68.
In the main erecting shops was lines of class 47's under construction.
After this we caught the Pines Express up to Stockport.
At Stockport in the up bay was a Steam tank loco on some coaches with a Palethorpes Sausage van on the rear.
The steamer took us to Huddersfield, for 20:45hrs where we got off, and caught the 2100hrs Trans Pennine back to Dewsbury.
The steamer then went via Bradley Wood Jct, at Huddersfield to Bradford Exchange Station.
This is from memory.

I remember the Palethorpes sausage van!
It used to be part of the 1556 from Halifax to Stockport.
I think the coaches used to return on the 1935 Stockport-Bradford Exchange [probably the train you remember catching].
Do you know what happened to the sausage van? It made a big impression on me as a lad, because I liked sausages then [and still do!].

I remember using the 1935 back to Halifax once. Wasn't there a line which avoided Guide Bridge station layout by passing round and over it at a higher level? I seem to remember looking down on the lights of Guide Bridge station. I also remember the train used the eastern single line bore of Standedge tunnel and then the southernmost [fast?]lines of the quadrupled track down to Huddersfield.
Happy days!

I use a Sony Ericson K530i in VGA mode, with a 1GB card.
This takes stunning pics, and slips into your pocket with ease.
My nephew gave me this phone.
Last Time I went to Crewe was for a meeting of the EWS GS Company Council, up at the electric Depot.
We stayed in the ex BR hotel on the Station.

I tend to take a few photos on my mobile - easy when out and about as I always have it on me (Sony Ericsson k770i) and useful for doing things without being noticed too much

Super quality pics! I must invest in a decent camera and not keep relying on my mobile phone!

I use a CanonEOS 1000d with a 18mm-135mm IS lens. I find this the beat for staion shots as it got tha bit extra in the standard lens. (we all could do with a bit extra on the lenght) LOL:D

Thanks for that bit of info, will try that another day!

So its a good chance this 70 would have passed through Stafford then, it was top and tailed by the way!!!!
