Hi,

1) Which class of cuurent passenger stock has the most sub-classes (such as 350/1 and 350/2) - is it 170s with 9?
2) Which class of post-steam passenger stock had the largest initial order?

Any more that I think of will appear here.

Thanks.

There are currently six subclasses of 170, but there was seven.

170/1 - MML
170/2 - Anglia/Hull Trains
170/3 - SWT/Porterbrook
170/4 - Scotrail
170/5 - Central Trains
170/6 - Central Trains
170/7 - Southern (now 171)

I think that is the most of any current stock.

Brilliant, cheers mate. Found a list on Wikipedia, but only after you'd posted this, and TBH I don't trust everything I read on there... Take it MML's/HT's/SWT's now lie with LM/XC etc?

Cheers

Hull Trains leased units from Anglia so they will have gone to NXEA. I think XC and LM share the 170/5 & 170/6 units. The SWT units are now used by FTPE, and XC have the former MML units. I can't say where Porterbrook's 170393-399 are though, CT did have 393-398, SWT had 170399.

There were 197 power cars in the production batch, but they were built as DMUs, so at most that is 98 sets, however the order was for more initially.

There were 115 class 156 built, but I think the last 15 or so were added to the order.

EDIT: Infact the HSTs were two different class of unit aswell, so that is less.

170397-170399 were with CT, since then 170397 and 170398 now operate with XC and 170399 has been renumbered 170309 and now operates with FTPE, 170393-170396 are scotrail units.

There was a 170392, this was ordered for SWT but was mistakenly delivered in southern livery, it was repainted into SWT colours and is ironically now 171730 (source platform 5 DMU 2008)

as for largest initial order, class 158?

Ah, now then, that is not the story as I know it. It was originally intended to be170727 and was delivered to Selhurst as planned, but before it entered service, it was renumbered 170392, repainted, given a different coupling and sent SWT. In the meantime three more 170/7s were built and numbered 170727-170729. When SWT received 170399 (from MML), 170392 returned to Southern, had another repaint, got it's original couplers back and became 171730

From what I've read, the class 377 units ordered by Porterbrook number 700 vehicles (split into 182 separate units of varied length) that must surely be a contender for the largest single order even if it's for multiple TOCs.

There was never one big HST order, the power cars were ordered in batches by coaching stock lot no:
43002-55 (Lot 30876)
43056-123 (Lot 30895)
43124-152 (Lot 30941)
43153-190 (Lot 30946)
43191-198 (Lot 30968)

The first three batches contain a guards van, whereas the last two did not.

When did MML give SWT 399? As 399 was with Central before it became 309.

Yes they did hire units from Anglia Railways but then they received their own dedicated fleet of 170's numbered 393-396. The Anglia Railways sets then returned. When the specially ordered 170's were replaced by 222's, the 170's went to Scotrail, which is where they are now. 393-396 are with Scotrail now, 397+398 are with XC, and 399 is with TPE as 309. SWT never had 399, they had 392, which was intended to be a Southern unit. 399 started out as a a spare Anglia Railways set, before moving to MML, then moving to Central Trains with the other 170's then finally being moved to TPE. Hope this helps. :)

You mean the 375 order as originally the 377's were 375's. If not there's only one TOC that ordered the 377's (even if FCC is borrowing them they are Southern's units).

399 was a Porterbrook spot hire unit which I believed MML hired whilst it's own fleet received engine modifications. It is possible it could have been 398 or 396 though. In anycase, as I understood it, when SWT got 399, 392 became 730.

SWT never got 399 it went Anglia - MML - CT - FTPE. 392 went back to Southern when SWT did the 158 and 170 swap with TPE
