Needs to be named after different uni's served by XC so Staffordshire University would get a mention.

Yes the University Quarter in Stoke-on-Trent is very close to the station, so Staffordshire University would be very appropriate.

So to would Aston University which is also about 200 yards from the railway line into New Street..... and it's not a former polytechnic.

More likely to annoy than endear.

Care to explain why ?

Even if they did get named it would just be a sticker, not a proper cast name-plate like this!

Why do you say that. The original nameplates on 220s and 221s were cast ones. Or is your pathetic hatred of XC and Voyagers shining through again.

Nothing against XC or Voyagers but I've always disliked names on multiple units. I can't put my finger on exactly why but I feel the same about First Leeds putting names on some of their 2011 dual-power buses.

Locomotives, on the other hand, are different. Every passenger locomotive should have a name imho! Freight locomotives I don't mind really either (my irrational dislike of 66s aside).

If not THE only TOC.

Trans Pennine Express may not give extra discount for the NUS card but they give 50% discount for Student (16-25) Railcards.

I refuse to share a nameplate with the University of Edgbaston (sorry OP ;))
Hear hear! :D Aston all the way! :p

Though I grudgingly have to accept that Crosscountry do directly serve the University of Birmingham, albeit not on the services that are operated by Voyagers.

Hi all!
Follow on from my thread about locos and MUs named after UK universities (http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=109015), I had a bit of a brainwave: Why not give the once-named, now-denamed CrossCountry Class 221 fleet a name after each of the Russell Group Universities?

.....

So, what do you think? I thought that loads of students take XC every year to travel to and from university every year, and I thought that it would be nice to have each university represented by a Voyager. Besides-I think it's about high time the class got names again.

Those names should really help to build bridges with the communities served by XC. Very diverse and encompassing. Why not just name them after the cities served by the TOC or interesting places along the route that might suggest journey locations to the wider public? Why not choose football clubs. Lots of people on XC on a weekend are off to the match or shopping centres or museuems.

Plus it seems you can only have a train named after you if you are one of the older universities. Can’t have the oiks from the pollys getting a look in can we. Dirty commoners. Said as a proud graduate of the drinking, eating take away curries and failing to sleep with attractive women 4 year course offered by Northumbria University.

You haven’t even managed to include all of the cities served by XC

Care to explain why ?

Because most people hate students and think they are lazy, effete, whining, clueless wonders ignorant of the real world and cosseted beyond belief. Will that do? ;)

Oh sorry, would you like me to include Guildford?

No offence to anyone when I say this but those nameplates were Virgin and this is Arriva...

If they did get names, they would be stickers.

Let's be honest, it'll always be Leeds Met. My Mum works there, my brother went there and I'm still not convinced it's a proper uni :-P

Naming multiple units is a bit superfluous to my mind, although I suppose it does make units more interesting and to multiple unit officianados it will be nice.

I like the way they named the Locos previously like the Warships, and Westerns, but they need to name all of then with the same kind of name, so the University names is a good idea as long as they name them all and not make one into a company name or of an ex-director that has died or his dog!

In my eyes Virgin started well with the pendolinos in the "Virgin ....." series but cocked up when they named some different such as "Tate Liverpool"

Agreed with the Virgin naming series-"Penny the Pendolino"? Really? My favourite name on the Pendos has to be 390050 "Virgin Invader" though...;)...naughty me!

I thought naming them after cities on the route was a nice touch though.

Yep, I did like how they did that.

My favourite Pendo name has to be 'Penny the Pendolino' though.

I'll get my coat...

I love the idea you've put forward, it'll give Voyagers a bit more of a feel to them if you ask me.

Although I must admit Northumbria University and Newcastle should also be on there, they are pretty prominent at the end of the day.

Not sure if I misread your first post, but I couldn't see Durham on there! - and I think they're something like the 3rd best Uni in Britain, aren't they?

EDIT: Haha, I must have missed it out! :P

I forgot about "Penny...." about the silliest name ever! I know it was for the Thomas childrens book series, so good for young kids, but oh dear:(

Yeah the cities was a good idea, same as the steamers and electrics before, but again they needed to name all in the same context, cities or Virgins not a mix of both, same with the Voyagers with the Explorers names then having some with no names!

I never thought of "Virgin Invader" in that way, unususal for me;), I usually notice all the sexual innuendo's, obviously you have the same sexually depraved mind as me but a bit quicker

A mix of city and other themed names was a feature that applied to the Princess Coronations and the class 86s and 87s on the West Coast as well.

All the Super Voyagers were named after explorers when they were launched, of course, it is only because they have been split between two operators, and Virgin own the nameplates, that a good proportion of the fleet is now nameless.

I thought that, and the little plaques inside explaining each name, was a very nice touch.

What were the names of 221114 and 221116-221118 (Still with Virgin) and 221119-221141 (now with Cross Country) ?

I don't seem to have any names for these units

The complete list of original class 221 names is as follows:

221103 Christopher Columbus
221104 Sir John Franklin
221105 William Baffin
221106 Willem Barents
221107 Sir Martin Frobisher
221108 Sir Ernest Shackleton
221109 Marco Polo
221110 James Cook
221111 Roald Admundsen
221112 Ferdinand Magellan
221113 Sir Walter Raleigh
221114 Sir Francis Drake
221115 Sir Francis Chichester
221116 Sir David Livingstone
221117 Sir Henry Morton Stanley
221118 Mungo Park
221119 Amelia Earhart
221120 Amy Johnson
221121 Charles Darwin
221122 Doctor Who
221123 Henry Hudson
221124 Charles Lindbergh
221125 Henry the Navigator
221126 Captain Robert Scott
221127 Wright Brothers
221128 Captain John Smith
221129 George Vancouver
221130 Michael Palin
221131 Edgar Evans
221132 William Spears Bruce
221133 Alexander Selkirk
221134 Mary Kingsley
221135 Donald Campbell
221136 Yuri Gagarin
221137 Mayflower Pilgrims
221138 Thor Heyerdahl
221139 Leif Erikson
221140 Vasco de Gama
221141 Amerigo Vespucci
221142 Matthew Flinders
221143 Auguste Picarde
221144 Prince Madoc

Note that neither the names presently fitted to 221115 "Polmadie Depot" nor 221142 "BOMBARDIER Voyager" are original: The name "Polmadie Depot" was only recently revived when 221115 gained it's promotional Bombardier livery in September 2010, and the name applied to 221142 was "filched" from 220017 when that unit was transferred to the Arriva XC franchise.

Thanks for that, I don't have much info on DMU's as I am a Loco fan.

What I don't understand is why they de-named 221114 and 221116-118 ?

221114 to 221118 were originally meant to transfer to Arriva Crosscountry - a fairly last minute decision saw them retained with Virgin on the west coast. They lost their nameplates in the interim.

What happened to all of the physical nameplates? D'you think Branson has them in his office ready to reapply them if he ever regains that franchise? ;)

I thought that at least some of the ones off the 220s had been auctioned off?

I wonder why the names were never reapplied to 221114 - 118 when it became evident that they would stay with Virgin.
