To be fair to the TOC, this job seems to be an agency position, they would likely pay a set contract rate to the agency who use that money to hire multiple staff at a wage of their choice.

That is seriously going to depend on circumstances with that wage on permanent nights.
Quite - permanent nights is probably health damaging and it looks as tho' it's a five day rolling week - so even weekends are worked. You would have thought they could get a better standard by adjusting shifts - but perhaps standards are not measured...

Indeed, but I'd imagine that the cost of living is lower in Blackpool than where the original vacancy was so it may be more bearable.

The Blackpool one also mentions an allowance for working nights, the other one doesn't.

A job is better than ..no job.

Eight hour shifts on permanent nights 5 days a week on just over minimum wage for experienced staff with a driving license. The "A job is better than no job" attitude is exactly how employers are getting away with it. Disgraceful.

A bit more than I'm on at the moment (I do around 30-37 hours a week, Only just tips over £1,000 per month before tax)

The TOC is probably paying the agency twice that. This is only speculation to be fair but I know what the agency got paid for a recent job I had and it was about twice my wage.

Being more than you are on doesn't make it right though.

I know from experience paying an agency is around twice the rate you'd pay the employee directly, however it may come cheaper for the business if they want someone short term, but for long term there is no benefit to the business.

This works out about £7.50 an hour (37.5 hour week) plus whatever the night shift allowance is, so probably takes them over £8 an hour with the night allowance, sounds a decent figure for a cleaner, who let's face it in most employments will be getting minimum wage of £6.50.

Regarding the op despite saying employer confidential, which TOC has a depot at Southsea then, as says location Southsea?

Cheers for that richw. Glad I wasn't imagining things. Ha ha. The job I had that I was talking about was very short term, sick leave cover, so I could imagine how it might be cheaper. I can't work out some employers who use temps long term though, and I know of a good number in Liverpool, including the the government and council. Surely long term the costs of paying more money for a worker can't out weigh the cost of doing your own recruitment and any severance pay. Surely they can just keep offering short term contracts (Which I am not a fan of either).

Or, tell us why you don't wish to apply for this job.

The criteria suggests that this is not even an entry level job as well!

"previous cleaning experience, ideally gained in an industrial environment, be prepared to work nights on a permanent basis and be a real team player"

Cleaning jobs have such cr@p money and shifts that anyone should be able to apply for them and do them.

With criteria such as this, even I would be rejected if I went for it! (Not that I would)

Yes but what appeals to some people about the Northern jobs is the full sick pay and if you know how to abuse the sickness system there's a lot of money to be made for doing nothing.

But given that they provide prepared rolling stock and are responsible for the customer perception of a TOC, £8ph seems low given it's night work.

Seems to me that nearly every other TOC position is paid a reasonable salary..

In fairness to Kommunist Rail, at least up north, they have the ****s to employ their own staff with travel benefits and pension rights.

Shame on trashy Stage(confidential)th West Trains for using some two bit trashy contractor.

This reminds me of that David Walliams/ Matt Lucas airport based comedy a few years ago, where one of the characters was a dim lad wanting to be a pilot, who thought working in the airport burger bar would help him up the career ladder to be a pilot.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
Theres a lot to be said about this, given that the biggest and seamingly unsolvable in most cases complaint about trains is clenlyness. If a major London Commuter TOC is carrying on like this then there iether not bothered about it or are expecting too much for to little.

I suppose you'd mainly do SWT, If I remember rightly there's only around 2 or 3 FGW units stabling there? Thinking about it, they probably go to the sidings next to Fratton station left untouched, not 100% sure on that
