This is a trivial question but....i'm due to start driver training in the future with Arriva Northern, and was just wondering about whether the cabs are similar to that of Busses in that, in the Summers when we have sweltering days, are the cabs air conditioned, or is it just a window open and complimentary poxy fan blowing hot air around the cab like we have.

I'm pretty certain that most of the stock (if not all) is a window open job. Some stock have the equivalent of a desk fan......

I'm reminded of the railway programme filmed at Cardiff Canton during driver training for ATW on a 142. Regarding air conditioning:
*opens cab window* "On"
*closes cab window* "Off"
*opens cab window* "On"
*closes cab window* "Off"

Thinking about the stock that is at Northern, there is a (small) possibility that the 158's have it (but given how often it doesn't work for passengers...) and the 333's I imagine will too. Can't think that any of the others do, however

I don't work for Arriva but all the stuff I drive is similar to their stock and have cab air con that usually works, even when the punters have none. Trouble with opening the window is its loud and makes vigilance difficult to hear

If you're a GWR man, the West fleet was retrofitted a few years back, it isn't a universal feature.

Standard 158s have no cab aircon. SWT sorted the duff saloon system and fitted feeder pipes into the cabs on theirs, and GWR fitted separate cab units to theirs. As for Northern, I've no idea whether they have modified their fleet; I doubt it :-/

One 158's have piped air con from the saloon. There is a "cab cooling" button which if pressed puts the system to max cooling to keep the driver happy. Unfortunately it simply puts the whole system to max cooling and freezes the passengers!:D
