Hi everyone - first time here, so please excuse me if this request is not relevant or not possible!

I was going through some old family photos the other day, and came across this. Presumably it's at a heritage line somewhere, probably in the mid 70s - and I'm wondering where.

Does anyone recognise the loco...? And therefore the line?

Many thanks
OB.

The loco is former National Coal Board 0-6-2T No.5, which was a regular performer for many years on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from it's early days. As such, the location is very likely Grosmont station on the NYMR.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway have had two such “Lambton tank” locomotives pretty much since the inception of the line as a preserved venture (They're still there today). They were acquired from the NCB’s Lambton & Hetton Colliery Railway, based at Philadelphia shed in County Durham. Part of the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Colliery Railway paralleled the Leamside line in the Penshaw/Shiney Row area and the NCB had running powers over some LNER/BR lines in the Wearside area.

Yes i volunteer up there and there two lambtons are 5 and 29, 5 is not operational currently awaiting its ten yearly overhaul and is stored in the deviation shed and has been for at leat 7 years or more. 29 is under overhaul and is currently progressed to work into traffic for the spring steam gala.

Probably not as it won't be able to cope with the 7 coach trains up the 1 in 49 to Goathland but i imagine that it will be running driver training/driver experience courses and in use at galas. Other than that i can't see it having any other use apart from visiting any other railways, weardale perhaps?:D

.

I'm trying to come up with a polite response to that, but the best I can manage is that you are talking total garbage.

Ideally, 29 will be back in traffic in time for the 40th gala, as it hauled the offical opening train. Fingers crossed that she is finished in time.

If you had any experience of Lambton tanks, you would know that they are quite capable of hauling five coach trains over the Moors, six at a push, with No 5 anyway.

Five has been out of traffic since about 1995. New cylinder block required.

Not wanting to sound critical but I would also add that the massively depleated NYMR home fleet needs all the engines they can get their hands on to maintain the peak timetables.

Some have talked about only having three engines at times. From memory the Gold timetable needs 5 minimum. Whilst the Lambtons can't take 7 coaches up the incline to Goathland, 5 is better than nothing, and a lot more cost effective than hiring in something else as cover.

Four locos peak season, in fact for most of the year (albeit one diesel off peak, but it still has to be found and paid for). Five if they try and run "Pay and Play" courses. The Lambtons are handy off peak, if the train lengths are kept sensible for the demand. Peak season, that's harder to do. the locos don't stick with the same set all day, so you can't just have one short set out. Peak season, they would need pairing with a diesel, so double your running costs. Even worse, if it is a hired in diesel!

The problem, is the number of locos required per day!
