Can you break your return journey for more than a day with an Anytime Month Return Ticket?

There seems to be a misconception amongst many (including railway staff) that there is somehow a limit to how many times one many break his/her journey.

If there is no break of journey restriction attached to a particular ticket then the passenger may break his/her journey as many times as he/she wishes, provided that he/she always proceeds further along the journey and doesn't backtrack at any time.

If there is break of journey restriction attached to a ticket then no break of journey is permitted.

Just out of curiosity, does it matter if you have your ticket clipped at the first stage of your journey, then break for a couple of days and continue? Wouldn't the ticket appear to have already been used?

It shouldn't, however if you're breaking your journey very early on then it is usually good practice to ask the guard to annotate the ticket to show that you have only used part of the ticket.

There is no compulsion to do this though.
