Hi guys,

Just a quick question. I'm a trainee driver so I think I know how the application process works roughly, but my fiancee and I keep arguing with her sister because she seems to think she knows better.

Basically I got my trainee position in 2012 and ever since she's been going on at her husband to keep applying for driver jobs. He got a knock back by Southern in September, then another from LOROL in October, due to him putting stupid answers on his application, and he also got knocked back by Croydon Tramlink. Despite on numerous occasions both of us telling them he has used up both of his chances of applying, and I even told them he couldn't apply within six months but I got ignored for that too, the sister-in-law keeps insisting he keep applying for driver jobs as they'll never know or find out.

Am I right in thinking he has usd up his chances? And they will definitely just keep rejecting him no matter how many jobs he applies for now? This is more for my own sanity than anything.

Cheers.

I was aware of the '2 strikes and you're out' situation with regard to taking the aptitude tests.

You'll have to be a little more specific as to why he got 'knocked back'.

Frankly, if he put 'stupid answers' on his application form, he's an idiot and the industry is better off without him. Just go along with his wife (ooh-err!), it's no skin off your nose, is it?

I thought you could only actually apply twice? Am I wrong to think that?

Well with the applications he got emails to say he was not being taken any further.

Yes if you taken the OPC tests twice and failed twice then you have no chance of becoming a driver unless they change the rules on this. This would be made quite clear to any candidate at the start of the assessments and they would give the candidate a chance to opt out of taking the test on that day if they didnt feel well etc. Once you have taken the test twice and failed twice Im pretty certain that your name is put on the national database to say you have failed twice. Part of the application form normally asks if you have taken the tests before and what the result was. So yes they will know that he has used his chances. And I doubt he would even get a response from his applcation.

He can apply to as many companies as many times as he likes but if he is putting stupid answers then he is just wasting his time.

If he fails the psychometric tests then he has to wait 6 months, if he fails them a second time then that is it.

So yes you are wrong but if he cant be bothered with the answers then I wouldnt waste my time on him or your sister in law, well in relation to this anyway.

Edit-
It sounds like your sister in law wants him to apply for the jobs but he doesnt want to so let them get on with it.

You can apply a million times if you like but can only sit the psychometric tests twice in total
Not quite right, you can only fail them twice in total. You can sit them a million times too if you keep passing them! ;)

I think what he meant was that one can apply to as many TOCs as many times as you like , albeit most TOCs say that one can't reapply with 6 months of a rejection.

think people are getting slightly confussed here....

you can apply as many times as you want. Apply meaning filling out the application form on the website.... thats it.

Once you have passed this stage then you have the testing stage, this you can sit everytime you apply as long as you keep passing them (obviously no point but its the pure facts here)

once you have failed for a second time however, you will not be able to take anymore tests. You can keep applying but you will never be sucsessful as your name is on a national database that all the TOCs use.

as said before, the only way round this would be if the rules were changed... There is no other way, End of.

hope i have cleared that up and not made it more confussing, it makes sense to me! haha

...so I think I know the answer to this but here goes anyway....

I sat the OPC tests back in OCT 2012 for Northern as a trainee driver. Passed all tests apart from the Mechanical 4.1 which I think from memory it was only a borderline pass. Now I realise that I have to wait 6 months before I can re-apply with Northern BUT does this also mean that I cannot apply for a trainee role for any TOC within this 6 month curfew?

And also as part of my feedback I was informed that some TOCs do not have the mechanical tests as part of their assessments. Would anybody know if FTPE do not have such tests?

Cheers

Answer: your cannot sit the OPC tests again within a six month period regardless of who you are taking the test through. But if you have a borderline pass that is still a pass so you still have your two lives intact. And a lot of TOC are changing to the driver fault finding test instead of the mechanical comprehension test.

Without meaning to sound unduly harsh, it sounds to me as though your fiancee's sister and her other half are a couple of idiots, quite frankly! She sounds desperately jealous of your success, and he sounds either hopelessly detached from the reality of what is required for the job, or just completely disinterested. Either way, if I was in your shoes I would let them get on with it and just enjoy discreetly reveling in it every time the conversation comes up! :D

He has precious little chance of ever getting near the job from what you've said, so I really shouldn't worry about it!
