Thought this question might have been asked before, but couldn't find it during searching.

If a station has ticket gates, but is unattended (thus gates are forced to open position), are you able to just walk through, or must you run your ticket through the machine?

Obviously you have a valid ticket - but you're not validating it.

Just walk through.

There's no requirement (or point) to putting a ticket through an open barrier.

If you are referring to Paper tickets then that is correct. However if it were to be an Oyster card or other ITSO smart card used as the ticket for the journey then it must be validated despite the Barriers being open. I mention this as it is not clear if the OP is referring to a paper ticket or a smart card ticket.

Ok thanks. Was just wondering what the situation would be if there was an Revenue Protection Officer around who saw you just walk through. But does make sense (eg split tickets are allowed and the second one isn't inserted into a gate unless BOJ)

Indeed there is no requirement to put a paper ticket through a gate which is locked open, although if the ticket will be swallowed anyway and you have it ready, then inserting it is probably the easiest and most environmentally friendly thing to do.

What happens if there's a fault and the ticket gets jammed in an unsupervised (and therefore open) gate and you haven't completed your journey so you still need the ticket?

You often see puzzled passengers who can't work out why the barrier won't take their ticket even though everyone else is just walking through the open gates.

Exactly what I was going to type when I saw the title of the thread.

Only thing to add is to make sure that you get the correct colour light / get the correct type of beep before proceeding.

Generally still not a good idea to insert it into the barrier :)

Unless you have a season ticket loaded onto an oyster, then you don't need to touch. Provided you're travelling within your ticket area of course!

Whilst the T&Cs of oyster say you must validate a season ticket on each journey there's no penalty for not doing so.

Not sure that punctuation makes it clearer, as I read it wrong at first! You DO need to touch in AND out if you have pay-as-you go. But, effectively, season ticket users don't really need to go out of their way to touch if you are passing barriers left open within your valid season ticket's zones.
