Hi All,

Ive got an MMI coming up soon and have never done one, only done a CBI and failed due to a terrible answer I chose.

But what's the actual difference between MMI/CBI and DMI I'm not looking at questions but from research the MMI/CBI questions seem to be more or less what you get asked in your DMI.

So what are they actually looking for at an MMI if you're doing similar questions again at DMI?

I've never done a DMI, only MMI, but I think the main two differences are that the person conducting the MMI has received specialist training in how to do these psychological interviews, whilst the DMs doing the DMIs probably have not, the other difference would be that during your MMI, you really get probed a lot, they dig very deep and ask many questions, whilst I don't believe this typically happens at a DMI. Probably depends on the company and who interviews you, but that is my impression.

MMI is part of the psychometric testing stage and you are required to pass it.

DMI is basically the job interview with a local Manager

CBI is a competency based interview and is the style of interview. The questions are typically "Tell me a time when.." type.

Yeah I understand that and having done a CBI and DMI the questions were very similar so I can only assume MMI is the same but it seems like you have the official MMI then an unofficial version of it at DMI.

I know I'm required to pass it, just seems strange they're all asking the same questions.

I wouldn't say they are the 'same' There may be a little overlap with some DMIs but the DMI has much more and is more about you getting the actual job.

They are also looking for different things. The DMI is about you as a person and the Manager wants to see if your going to be a good fit for the depot.
The MMI is very limited in it's scope and questioning. There is a fixed set of questions. The DMI is based on questions that the TOC want to ask and can change on the fly, get totally ignored, and other questions asked at any point.

I wouldn't consider the DMI as an 'unofficial version'. It's its own entity altogether and used for a different purpose. It's also unique to each TOC/FOC/OA.

Employment has changed over the years and structured interviews are pretty much the norm. It prevents any bias and accusations of unfairness and removes those awkward, and often illegal questions being asked.

Thanks for clarifying I just found it odd that my CBI had relatively the same questions (not as in depth as the CBI) as my recent DMI had.

Would it not have been best to ask the person running the test about these questions?

For the paper and computer tests I found out there and then. For the mmi it took a few weeks for me to hear back and that was the toc contacting me to put me on to the next stage.

I was never contacted by the OPC.
May I know how long that hear back from toc after done the mmi? Thx

Hi all,

I hope everyone is keeping safe and well.

I am a new member and do apologise in advance if this question has been answered before.

I have a medical coming up to start as a trainee train driver with LNER.

Has anyone recently had a medical with them?

I have read that they test for diabetes. I was diagnosed with type 2 however have been under control with normal blood sugar levels. Is this likely to affect the medical outcome?

Also is controlled colitis an issue?

Many thanks in advance

G
Hi

Did you pass the medical declaring type 2 diabetes? I’ve an upcoming medical and in a similar situation.

Thanks in advance

Just had (and passed) a safety-critical medical for a conductor (not QUITE the same as a driver, as I understand it, but close) so I'll pop this up here in case it is useful for anyone else:

As long as you can show you understand your diabetes, recognise the signs of an impending hypo and what to do about it, and that you happily engage with your GP and other relevant clinicians, you'll be fine.

There's a good doc about it here, though I don't know if it is current or not: https://www.rmt.org.uk/news/publications/guide-for-medical-assessors-diabetes/

I got the feeling that anything that is controlled is OK. They're not selecting a team of perfect athletes for the Olympics; they just want to be sure you're not likely to flake out at a critical moment.

It seemed to me that much of the advice here around medicals boils down to 'you're overthinking it'. I did loads of research anyway, just in case, but it turned out I was drastically overthinking it :)

Hi, I am currently a dispatcher and had a medical for a guards job today. I take medication for epilepsy, but I have been seizure free for 17 years. After my medical for dispatch I had a follow-up phone call and all was well, I am able to be a dispatcher or guard, but not drive (I knew that would be the case) fast forward to today, all was going well, appointment for follow up phone call made. Then, before the medical finished, the nurse on the other side of the laptop who was talking with the guy doing the medical, asked when I last spoken to my doctor about my condition. As I've not done it recently, I've been temporarily classed as unfit for safety critical duties, until they talk to my doctor. Anyone had anything similar? I will probably get my follow up call early next week, but how long I'm gonna be OTR I've no idea.

Hi,
In my opinion, what they send you to prep for the tests is sufficient. You don't need to pay out for anything else.
The tests aren't complicated and are designed to determine if you are suitable for the role. If you are not suitable for the role, there's no point trying to force it as the process will find you out, or even worse you'll get the job and either hate it or struggle.
I'd suggest read through this forum and find other people's experiences and advice for the tests, study the guidance the OPC have sent you, get a good night's sleep the night before and do your best.
All the best

You don't need to answer all the questions.

Hi apologies for the late reply,

They did a blood sugar test during the medical and asked about the history of the diagnosis.

As long as you have it in control and are able to show that you have a good understanding of your condition you will be fine and you blood sugar levels are not too out of control.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Im aware that we don't need answer all of them. I was just wondering if there is any way to prepared myself and pass them.
Thank you for your answer.
Only practice I would probably recommend is to try reading passages of text and have someone else ask you questions on it, accuracy of answers is key but I don't think incorrect answers mark you down.

No problem, the whole test is understand rules and regulations so you'll read a passages and there will be questions on it.

The more you do and are accurate the better chance you have, you don't have to answer all 34 (I didn't I think I got to mid to late 20s) but as far as I'm aware wrong answers don't mark you down.

Hi, I have an upcoming medical for Northern Conductor, through Optima Health, it might seem like a daft question.. but does anyone know how closely they watch you during you producing the urine sample? I haven't done drugs or anything warranting cheating, it's just according to my letter I will have a male doing my medical with me, and as a female I won't be very comfortable having a man staring at me while I try and use the toilet!

Hi

Thanks for the reply. Did they do a blood sugar reading there and then using a monitor or take a blood sample to send away?

Having recently sat the tests myself I couldn't agree more with Tysoe. No point wasting money on additional materials.

I had my day 1 tests in January, which compromised of paper tests on the day which was:
-Group Bourdon
- test of everyday attention Tea-OCC
-M7-SJT situational judgement test
-DFFT driver fault finding test
I didn’t purchase any practice materials, only used these forums and the OPC practice materials they sent. Luckily I passed, but it was just constant practice through the paper mock tests.

I’ve had friends do the psychometric down the years with varying results! They’ve nearly all said the same thing afterwards, those that were successful had a good rest the day before the test, in some cases spent the night before in a hotel close to the assessment centre to avoid a long commute, and had a clear and positive mindset. Those that didn’t do so well had issues with travel, poor sleep, worrying, nervousness and struggled to concentrate during the tests. Preparation is key but it’s not all about the tests!

Hi all,

Just messaging for some advice please;

I’ve been offered a trainee driver role and am awaiting a date for a medical. I take sertraline to control mild anxiety and I’m slightly concerned this will lead to a withdrawal of my offer?

My symptoms are well controlled, with no input, nor have they ever affected my ability at work or led to time off.

I’m curious has anyone experienced anything similar and what were the outcomes? Also if there are any drivers out there who also take sertraline, I’d be curious to hear from them.

Thanks!
