With the emergency stops, I know once when I was on Southeastern on I think it was an ElectroStar unit, some idiot pressed the emergency alarm three times in a row, each tiem causing the train to immediately break and stop.

Needless to say, the driver got very ****ed off!

There are a couple of issues with the HST stock (and I presume the loco hauled rakes are the same) which allow the train to move with doors not secure. There is no door/brake interlock system, so the central door locking (CDL) system is completely self contained and has no ability to hold the brakes on or prevent the Driver from powering up. It is perfectly possible for an HST to move with the CDL released and all doors unlocked - indeed, incidents (thankfully rare) have occurred where a train has stopped, the Guard has unlocked the doors, and the train has moved again in the platform with pax attempting to board or alight. In addition, the CDL cannot identify a door which is open or 'on the catch'. The locking bolt will simply not drop into the door correctly, but the system has no way of detecting this and so the hazard lights are unaffected and will extinguish once the CDL is activated. This is why it is not uncommon for problems to occur with doors not being fully closed and secure. The only safety system is the eyes of the Guard and dispatchers, and it is unavoidable, bearing in mind the size of the train and the nature of a busy platform, that these things will happen every once in a while.

Proved last week at Swindon when a Brizzle Temple Mead service from Paddington stopped on platform 4. The guard took a few minutes (literally) to unlock the doors, by which point some little tonk had barged a door open from the inside after dropping the handle (push on a door with the handle dropped and keep pushing the door and the catch won't re engage)

Talking about these systems, on a voyager does anybody know what the tone is that is frequently played.

Duuh-duh-Dah, Duuh-duh-dah sort of sound. Is it something to do with this passcom. Last time I went to London that thing was going off a few times, it's not annoying actually its quite a soothing sound in a way.

Is it a 'Call for aid' from a disabled toilet or the wheelchair area?

Are you sure the doors were still locked? I'm surprised a passenger was able to overcome the CDL, it's designed to keep them closed! I know it's possible to slip a closed door onto the catch while the CDL is still locked, but to open it fully is worrying!

If its what I think it is that you are referring to then its the call signal from the driver for the guard to get in contact. Like the 'boing' noise on a plane from the pilots. It's instead of making a 'could the guard contact the driver' announcement.

100% sure they were locked, no one else could open them and the light wasn't on. Not to mention the lack of clunk sound as they unlock. Believe the set was the one with the 60 years paintjob for her majesty. Would have been the public door on the TGS, platform side on platform 4.

About the only way to get the door open on a HST with the CDL bolt fully dropped is to wrench it off it's hinges (which I believe has happened before) or wrench the box the bolt sits in off the door (which has probably also happened before).
