Both flights I'm looking at are an A330-300 so 2-4-2 on Qantas and 3-3-3 on AAX. I flew an American Airlines A330 a few years back and loved the 2-4-2 layout, but like you said, the 3-3-3 layout on AAX is what's putting me off. Seatguru says for Qantas the width is 17.5 - 17.0 inches whereas Air Asia X appears to be 16.5 inches. For the dates I'm looking at, the fare for AAX is £160ish whereas Qantas is £320 so it's a fair difference, but like I said, the Qantas fare includes food and IFE. My plan is to use AirBNB when I'm there so it's pretty cheap when comparing the price to a hotel - hence why I can spend an extra two days!
Only you can answer this question really.
You will spend around £30 on food given purchasing on AirAsiaX and the layover in KL, so clearly this doesn't negate the saving.
You are going to get there with either airline. Time will pass, eventually.
But it would depend on what that money can do for you in Australia. Personally I would take the discomfort, load up my iPad with films and spend the £160 when I'm in Australia.
