Hi all,

I'm seriously itching to see some Greater Anglia 90s. Thinking of going to Stratford, but what is, in your esteemed opinions, the best place to see them? How many turns do they work a day? Many thanks.

They run 2 trains per hour from Liverpool Street to Norwich and 2 the other way. Stratford's a good place to see them in the travelcard zone, or if you want to go a bit further out, you can see them at speed at Romford or Witham, or really any other station on the Great Eastern Mainline. I say those two because they're hitting near the top speed through both of them, and you get a good clear view of them from the end of the platform.

The Great Eastern Main Line (Norwich - London) is the best place to see 90's in everyday action with 2tph both directions hauling mk3 coaches and DVT. If you head to Ipswich you may also be able to see freightliner 90's in use or being stabled in the yard.

If you're interested in travelling on them, an Anglia Day Rover offers unlimited travel between Ipswich and Norwich among other things, so it's possible to cop quite a few off!

Ipswich, I would say. You'll also see Freightliner 90s stabled there and working intermodals.

Though they don't make their presence known much during sociable, daylight hours ;)

To work the half hourly service requires 10 sets. The diagrams are fairly straight forward, just under a 2 hour run with roughly 30-40 minute turnarounds each end. So in theory the set you see on, for example, the 10.00 Liverpool St to Norwich will return in time for the 15.00 Liverpool St to Norwich.

On Mon-Fri there is an 11th set that spends most of the day in Orient Way CS, having worked the 06.24 from Norwich, returning on the 18.30 from Liv St.

To see them at 100mph then Witham is OK but there is only a couple of coffee shops on the station and the town is a bit of a walk. As said earlier Ipswich is probably the most interesting station and they are enthusiast friendly there as well.

If you're taking photos, Manningtree is my favourite spot:

(River Stour at Mistley just to the east of the station)

A rather nasty iron fence has replaced the broken wooden one shown, although it is still possible to keep it out of shot. And it is nicer at high tide !
