Don't you just hate them? The only use I can think of is that it sends a warning to the nearby public to get the hell out of the way of the oncoming idiot.
Oh, just thought of another use. Would tell a police officer that the idiot driving said crapmobile had no insurance and i could therefore seize and crush the piece of sh*t.

It's not a big bore exhaust - it's more a tuned cap on the end of the pipe - look beyond the silencer and the exhaust is normal size!

There was a car I used to see near my office which made me laugh, it was a Citroen Saxo (surprise surprise), completely stripped out inside, with 2 bucket seats and 4 point racing harnesses, it had been lowered and appeared to have no suspension at all. Under the bonnet, it was the standard, untuned 1 litre engine

Don't you just hate cars like that? I really do think you need to pull the owner in for psychiatric evaluation with regard to fitness to drive on a public road. McDonalds car parks at night would be rich pickings for police to go and get a few of these deathtraps and their idiot drivers off the road

So there's a silencer followed by something that makes a loud noise (presumably so it can be heard over the stereo playing sounds of a riveting hammer). Does that make any sense, or make the car go faster for that matter?

Cr*pmobiles? Pratmobiles might be closer, describing those who drive them.

Actually just spotted an "improvement".

hahaha :) It makes you wonder what the police are doing. I see these 'boyracers' every day and they all stick out like a sore thumb regarding none / invalid insurance / driving license offences etc. It's time they blitzed these public nuisances by crushing their 'cars'

It's the new silencer that makes them louder, the tip is mostly just for show.

don't even get me started on the pr!cks that put stupid looking body kits, on a 1 ltr Saxo and think it somehow makes it better/ faster, than my BMW (granted mine was a 1989 318). I really would be here all night.

Just because they are modified doesn't mean they are deathtraps. Again, just because someone has modified their car doesn't mean they don't have a license or insurance.
If all is in order, then I've got no problem with them, even though most of them make themselves look a bit of a prat.

What is the point? All it does is make people think you're an idiot, and that you're going to drive like one.

You're an arguementitive little chap, Ralphchadkirk! I have never said ALL modified cars are deathraps have I? I said 'crapmobiles' and you can easily spot one with just looking at the thing. There are many modified cars that have had thousands spent on them and they look the business and are probably the most best looked after cars on the road. However, you don't have to be an F1 mechanic to look at a modified wreck when you see one and I see plenty around the streets of Wigan being driven by freaks of modern society.
A 17 - 25 years old male has difficulty getting insurance for a bog standard, low powered car in the first place. Them driving about in a car around an inner city with big bores, fat alloys and K&N air filters and i guarantee you they will not have valid insurance, So if the police spent a couple of hours around the McDonalds and Supermarket car parks late at night, they could seize a hell of a lot of these pieces of rubbish and get them off the road by sending them to the crusher, where they belong!

I feel this debate is a bit like when someone comes in to slag off RPIs - one sided. So, as a car lover I'm going to issue some defensive points.

I owned a Saxo VTR back in 2003, and it was modified with a custom built sports exhaust which ended in a 5 inch exit. Yes it was loud, but that is because the exhaust system was no longer stifling power by destroying the sound an engine naturally makes. It was made at Welwyn Garden City and cost me over £400! It conformed to all road limits on noise regulations, and added an extra few bhp, along with better responsiveness, and a crisp rally style 'brap-brap-brap' on downshifts. The noise can be about performance, after all sports cars are all extremely loud because they want the maximum performance out of an engine. It was also fitted with a sports induction kit made by Pipercross I think, and this helped liberate a few more bhp, along with yet more sharpening of the engines throttle response, and on a cold day it would snort like Amy Winehouse!

The body remained standard, as did the suspension and window tints. I changed the wheels to items of the same size but much lighter weight, as reducing the unsprung weight improves handling greatly. NO NEON LIGHTS! I had a personalised registration featuring VTR which I never misrepresented and used the standard typeface for. I never drove with the fog lights on, except when the fog warranted it, and I always used my indicators (I'm looking at the BMW driver above for those last three points - after all, if you can generalise about people modifying a car, I can definitely do it about BMW drivers). Because of visibilty driving at night (that'll be the shift work) and because it helped when tooling down country lanes I knew, I fitted a bank of 4 rally spec Hella spotlights that were activated by the main beam of the cars headlights.

Whilst 15 bhp may not sound like much, you have to bear in mind the standard car was 100bhp, and the kerb weight was 890kg. So I went from 116 bhp/tom to 134bhp/ton.

If that's what you did, I have no problem with it. It's your money, you kept everything legal, and no doubt it looked a nice car. I'm not generalising about modifications; like I said, most are professional jobs and look very good. My beef is with the dangerous crap being driven very badly and very dangerously. And believe you me, there are an awful lot of these idiots around my way and nothing ever seems to be done about them

However, if they have modified the car in any way - even just using different format tyres or adding a spoiler - and they haven't told their insurance company, their insurance will be deemed invalid.

I love it when one of the chavmobiles as I call them pulls up alongside me at the lights expecting to beat me off the line when infact my VW Passat Estate 3.2l V6 always beats the pants off them :D

I must admit me and ths missus like our cars - she has a VW Golf R32 3.2l V6 and you always get the idiots trying to race her (or me if I am driving it), espeically Ford Focus drivers for some reason...

A fun game to play with Chavs is 'Bite the bait'.
To play this game you have to know a stretch of road reasonably well, especially where speed cameras are, or a camera detector kit in your car will work equally as well.

First when a chavs pulls up next to you in his prat-mobile, when you're at the traffic lights; start revving your engine and encouraging him to race; when the lights go green you and the chav should accelerate like mad, but when you know a camera is coming up, slam on all anchors and watch the chav recieve a nice fine up ahead.

I'm not that bad and wouldn't condone racing but taking off from traffic lights still amuses me :D

I did see a couple of cars racing in London the other week and passed a camera that subsequently went off :D

Are people still putting those silly blue lights on the front like they were a few years back or have they stopped that now?

They are still putting those stupid blue lights in the front in Kidderminster. So for each one i see i report it to the police with their reg plates.

Well my view on the exhausts are to make up for size of another things etc

But its the tits who race and crash who put the insurance up for everyone else and make me being a young adult unable to drive due to insurance premiums.

Was the exhaust 5 inches throughout or just the tip?
Nope, the main body of it was a 7 inch diameter pipe! Basically this business would cut, grind and weld what was best for your car from a big stock of polished stainless steel pipes they stocked. Better than off the shelf.

I'll think you'll find that a majority of these people are car enthusiasts, and its the minority of people giving these enthusiasts a bad name, I also would of thought that members on this forum would understand that, as they are railway enthusiasts and are used to getting bad reputations from 'stereotypes' themselves?

I personally havent got a problem with most of the things people do to their car, its seems to be a right of passage here in Essex and dabbled in it myself when I was a few years younger.

Its only when you get to a more sensible age that you realise what a tit you look like!

I overal don't mind car enthusiasts as i do admire some of the stuff they have done to the cars.

For example sticking Big Block V8's into Jeep Grand Cherokees and modifying them enough so they out acceralte Lambo's etc.

Just the ones i dislike are the miniorty who drive like idiots, and just how they act, also the fact that a lot of the changes are not notified to the insurancer.

Well one project if i had the money would be to do up a Jeep GC for a big block and so on as they sound fantastic :)

Dunno Why Ford Focus drivers. Just pray it is not a Focus RS that draws up though.

Car modification can go very well, if done tastefully. However everyones idea of tasteful is different. For my part i have a 1989 BMW 318i Touring, it is modified (not that you would know it from the outside) with a later model BMW 1.8 ltr engine, ECU re-map and limited slip diff, the outside has a few subtle asthetic mods like BMW pattern BBS ally wheels, and a BMW M-tech 2 body kit (which were optional extras when the car was new). My issue is with chavvies some but not all using taxpayers money, to paint thier car neuclear snot green put a body kit on that makes it only and inch from the ground, and an exaust can that would wake the dead, then to cap it all parking it in front of my living room window. Basically a lot of money and effort to make yourself look like a prick, but at the end of the day its thier choice, they may not like the way i've done my car. its a matter of opinion, were not all the same were unique life would be boring otherwise.

Only the dangerous, uninsured crapmobiles driven by idiots I detest. And you can sniff them out a mile. I wasn't having a go at anybody else

The little darlings can do whatever they like to the engines and exhausts of their souped up hairdressers cars, but they'll never sound as good as the Termignoni's i had on my Ducati (See second pic in my album)

I miss that bike, but i don't miss the cost of running it!

It's not the driving of these stupid cars that irritates me. It's the racket they make (either from the exhaust/engine or speakers that wouldn't be out of place at a rock concert) which creates a real nuisance and disturbance. The laws need tightening to outlaw this in the first place (assuming it's not already) and the penalty should be an immediate confiscation of the car and you can either have it back when it's been fixed or have it crushed into a cube
