Wow what a great catch! Very lucky to get not just one but two westerns out!

One thing I've often wondered is that since they display their pre-TOPS number does that require any special licence or do grandfather rights apply here?

They will have their full rolling stock numbers inside the cabs.

Does that also go for mainline-cleared steam locos that are (IIRC) TOPS-numbered in the 90s?

yes they normally have it on a small metal plate somewhere near the driver.

external numbering of locos/units has rather less utility, at least out on the rails (rather than sat in a depot or station) than it may once have had.

Fantastic pictures!

I think the Westerns are coming out for Train Simulator very soon, if they're not out already, so I'm looking forward to having a go on that.

Quite apart from all the technical aspects of the design that make them so interesting, I've always thought these were some of BR's most handsome locos. Especially in that lovely maroon paint.

What a fantastic set of photos!!!! I am so jealous that, 1) I missed seeing the loco movement and, 2) None of my shots could rival those. I take my hat off to the OP!!

sadly the westerns downfall was their lack of Power even on twin engine mated to the Voith Gearbox which couldnt put the power down, mekhydros were used in the german versions..they couldnt get em in the western body just too small...the western is big lOCO TOO ....the point was a single engined 47 or 50 had the same power to rail, DE Locos Killed off the DH era of western......cost of conversion to electric would have been prohibtive

Hats off to you for these photos, they're lovely!

A bonus hat off for whoever ensured the headcode box was accurate to what the train was running under.
