On the 0431 ex MKC only passengers were normally LUL or Silverlink staff.
Leaving Euston, 0035 ex EUS then on Christmas Eve always good on what used to be last train to MKC which I my day was 2134 I believe.

I used to be a regular on the first down trains from Kings Cross - 05:22 to PBO, 06:00 Leeds (now retimed to 05:50) and 06:15 Edinburgh (now Newcastle only) and the first two were quiet. The third (which back in the day had the travelling chef on board) was reasonably loaded.

The last one from St. Pancras towards Bedford on a Saturday is usually good for a fight and some vomit. And if you're really lucky, some idiot will set off a fire extinguisher too.

When I travel on the first/last train of the day it is never full and standing. Are there some services on the network which are? Generally I mean, and not due to delays etc.

Thameslink services are often standing room only late at night though at least (apart from Sat night/ Sun morning) there isn't a last train as such. They do seem to be listening at FCC though, as some of the late late services have been strengthened to 8 cars recently.

Most services out of London Victoria between 23.00 and 00.00 seem to be packed.

A lot of the Southeastern late trains out of Charing Cross can be very busy.

Normally all seats appear to be taken. The vestibules can often hold a good few more people, unless there is disruption, so I generally find there is little chance of being left behind.

Some years ago, the first Sunday Liverpool - Euston (a Mark 3 set) was overflowing, with doors locked about 15 to 20 minutes before departure time. Some band had been doing a "gig" in Liverpool the previous night and I think that, after the concert ended, a lot of the audience must have been in pubs / clubs / the streets waiting for their first train home.

0514 Aberystwyth to BHM INTL on a Monday can be standing on leaving Welshpool its a 2 car unit though diagrammed for 4 the rest of the week. Its then the prime commuter train into Birmingham from Shropshire. arr New St 0824. On a Monday the extra 2 carriages are added at Shrewsbury, though by the time Telford is reached its often full.

I used to get the last train on a Sunday off St. Pancras to Derby and it was usually surprisingly busy.

01:05 Waterloo to Southampton & 00:05 to Boutnemouth on a Friday/ Saturday night are sometimes crush loadings if there has been an event on in London. First class is often officially or unofficially declassified.

Mind you particularly in the summer anything on the SWML leaving Waterloo from 16:00 to close is often packed on a Thursday/ Friday.

1603 Lincoln Central-Peterborough on a Saturday - has often been one carriage and many left behind - anyone for Spalding then has to take train to Newark, Peterborough and back up to Spalding.

Aren't EMT required to provide taxis (or other means of transport) in those circumstances ?
