This morning, I found the following message in my inbox

--------------------------------------

Thank you for your further email, and I apologise for the delay in replying.

The trains were sold to CF Booth for scrapping and in general we do not sell on old train carriages. This is because of REACH regulations regarding hazardous materials.

After further investigations it appears that the C stock trains you refer to will not be available for purchase because of these regulations. I'm sorry to disappoint you in this respect.

Please contact me again if you need any help in the future.

Kind regards

Try asking for a very long term loan instead!

So, in other words, I wouldn't be able to buy a C Stock trailer car? What if I said I just wanted the body of one and they could have all the stuff below the sole bar? Or I repainted it so that it wasn't in the Coperate livery?

I was thinking of buying one to use as a bedroom/living space in my back garden?

Oh and what are these REACH regulations that stop people from buying them?

Your sig suggests you are 14, I am sure your parents/guardian would LOVE a crappy old tin can of a c stock carriage sitting in their back garden

I am 14, and my mum said that it would be fine with her, especially as she coul then use my current room as either a wet room or another bathroom (her ensuite).

I reckon people are confuysing REACH and COSHH. REACH is Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, an EU regulation implmented as law in the UK, which requires all substances used in quantities of greater than 1 tonne per year in the EU to be registered and fully tested to understand their health and environmental hazards. Asbestos will be registered (and restricted) under this, but the restrictions will be covered by Control of Substances Hazardous to Health in the UK (which incorporates REACH in its current form).

REACH is an additional layer to COSHH to help standardise testing and understand where nasty stuff is being used.

The problem here is asbestos, which is nasty and has been well known about for decades.

Just to keep you all up to date, about the sale of LU rolling stock, here is a response that I got over the last day or so.

-------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your further email of 6 August with some extra questions.

Firstly, our ‘D’ stock trains are subject to the same regulations.

Secondly, we have no place where we are able to remove all the hazardous material and the only possible solution here would be to speak to the scrap contractor directly.

Thirdly, as regards ‘C’ stock trains some equipment still has asbestos.

I’m very sorry I cannot say much more here other than to re-approach CF Booth, should you still wish to acquire some of our disused carriages.

That suggests they will allow Booth's to re-sell you a vehicle or two provided you pay ( Booth's ) for the removal of the asbestos - this may leave you with little more than a bare bodyshell, though.

Yes it would, which could be good. Any idea of how much one would be? And a body shell would be fine.

So you're just going to be living in a tin can! Will they even keep the doors intact?

(I'd wait for a D Stock tbh, the single-leaf doors/doorways mean you'll get less of a draught probably, plus they look nicer imo. Sadly I don't have enough space or time for one, plus the moving costs if I take it with me! I mean, I can't just shunt it along the ECML, fetching it from Rotherham would be enough of a problem in itself!)

Anyone know per chance what other unit currently forms a train with 5540 and 5722? My notes from yesterday is a bit jumbled up so would appreciate some help.

5540 + 5722 + 5581.

Sorry, no time to post my full listing of formations tonight - I'm fighting to stay awake!

3x C6 to go for disposal via the recently electrified Northwood sidings Wednesday 4, Friday 6, Tues 10 and Mon 16 as the S7 roll out steps-up.

5595-6595 and 6701 have left Acton Works for scrap.

Is that what they've been doing at Northwood? Electricifying the sidings? First the ramp for loading trains onto the back of lorries disappeared and was replaced by a much longer stretch of siding. Then it looked like they were electrifying it, but then the track came back up again and the ramp has been restored. Very confusing.

5520+5567+5536 have already gone.
Another is at Neasden for today.
The third moves Hammersmith-Neasden on Monday.

Good. I have cleared those ones.

Any idea which ones went today? And if you have advance gen on which ones will be going for the guillotine on Monday then I will try and make sure I bag them on Saturday, if not already cleared.

I'm told that 5507 was one of the units that went today. Not sure of the identities of the other two.

Did you see 5511 + 5564 + 5591 return to Hammersmith? If not, it may have been tripping to Neasden for later onward movement to Northwood...

Meanwhile, I apologise for not having posted my C Stock formation notes from the 19th August and 2nd September; lack of time! Should I still post them up for the record?

Shame if true, as i still need both 564 and 591.

After today, i still have 19 units left to bag, including 564, 591 and 701. (I know 701 is not possible to score now.)

Fingers crossed that they only scrap those I have already got until I am in London next, in 3 weeks. :)

No, I only saw it eastbound at Edgware Road and then returning west through Barbican. At the time I wondered if it was going to Neasden, however train 701 is shown as Hammersmith - Moorgate - Hammersmith in the WTT and it seemed to be running to those times.

BB21, I recently met someone from Leicester at Harrow on the Hill when I was under my most recent photo permit back in July.

Wasn't you by any chance was it?
