Night shifts are okay once you get used to them and stay on nights. However wait until you are on leave. Bit different then I can assure you as by the time you have got used to sleeping at NIGHT it's time to go back to working at night:(

Only tangentially related, but our night-shift guys work seven days on, seven days off 8pm to 8am. I've never done it, but they say it's easier to just sleep most of the day on their week off as the body can't cope with the constant swing.

I didn't realise that 87002 was still doing frontline duty. Just left Glasgow Central and 92018 was at the buffers having brought the stock from Polmadie and 87002 is at the head to take it off to Carstairs.

Nice! I saw it on the blocks in Euston last week having bought the stock in from Wembley, with a FL 90 on the other end. Meanwhile on the same night, 86101 was working the Southbound. Nice to still see the early Electrics still provide frontline service in this day and age!

Hmm.. you know when you have that moment where you're 99% sure about something but you start to doubt yourself? I'm sure it was 87002 but just when you mentioned 86101 I started thinking... well, it was dark and I only saw it from a moving train window. Nah, I'm sure it was.

Nope, you were right! 87002 did do the Caley Sleeper last night! So it's done a Glasgow this week while the 86 did a trip last week. Very tempted to do a return to Glasgow in the next week or so if either come out to play again. Not least now that one of the Skodas has apparently burst.

Is there any news/ideas about Euston to Oban sleeper service? Apologies if this has been dealt with elsewhere!

Oban was just a temporary measure while Fort William was off for engineering.

CS said that they'll look at new routes but as I understand it Oban is no more definite than any other possibility, so in ten years time we're just as likely to see a sleeper from Peterhead or Hawick.

Or not...

I don't expect these sleeper services to survive once Scotland leaves the UK to stay in the EU within the next 2 years.

I am near certain that it now will, particularly if it can negotiate EU membership.

I voted 'No' in the independence referendum. If Scotland can negotiate EU membership on terms anything like those the UK enjoys then I will vote 'Yes' if given the opportunity, as much as it would pain me to do so.

I think that many of the 55% feel the same way.

Do you expect them to survive if the opposite is true?

Yes I think you are right. I voted Yes and Remain but if we, Scotland I mean, don't move to stay in the EU then it's a sinking ship towards Isolation Island.

Based on what?

Serco CS have a 15 year franchise with funding and new stock procurement in place under the governance of Transport Scotland.

Whatever happens this is still a valid contract and there would be no grounds to cancel it, if it were I am sure that Serco would be due compensation not to mention the fleet of new trains bought and paid for with no work to do.

CS is probably the sleeper service with the most secure future in Europe at the moment. There is little if any threat to it's existence up to 2030.

Also is there any chance that this thread can stay about CS and not a general discussion about politics?

Are there any pick-up/set-down only restrictions in the English sleeper stops (Watford, Crewe, Preston, and Carlisle), or can I get in and out both ways?

Did it ever occur to you that other countries manage to run international sleepers? I find it unlikely that the sleeper would be canned if Scotland was to leave the Union.

The USA and Australia seem to manage it ok, among others.

Tourism and leisure travel is hardly going to dry up.

What international borders do sleeper services cross in either of these two countries? My "O" level geography is a little rusty but I was not aware of any land borders in Australia and in the US I am uncertain if sleeper services travel to Canada or Mexico.

There is one Americo-Canadian sleeper, the Maple Leaf service from New York to Toronto.
