Just been looking up on it, can someone tell me why it is so, so quiet? The booking office there is open daytime M-F, and closed all weekend, and there's little if nothing in the way of shops - its just basically a big, empty white box with some platforms in it. Odd for an NR managed station with over20,000,000 passengers a year. Anyone know why?

Cannon St principally serves the financial area of the City of London, which on weekends is practically deserted. The nearest big attraction is St Pauls, which is about a 10-15 minute walk, although Blackfriars is actually nearer.

It is much easier to reach the central and West End areas from the other southern stations.

I know, but with about 14 off peak deps per hour, surely ther's more call to do something with such a vast building :D

Cannon Street is being rebuilt hence the lack of shops. It did used to have them. They are building a new office block above hence the current state of the station. Believe the whole project is due to be finished in 2012.

Although its a City station it still has a sizable amount of people of saturday. But with Blackfriars closed at the weekend its the only way by NR into the city from the south.

The reason there are so many off-peak/Saturday departures from Cannon Street is all to do with lack of capacity at Charing Cross and London Bridge and nothing to do with passenger demand for Cannon Street. The vast majority of passengers on Cannon Street services alight/join at London Bridge. Particularly on a Saturday it is simply a glorified turnround siding. In fact for many years after Connex started running Saturday services, LU refused to open the Underground station unless there were actually engineering works at Charing Cross.
