Is 501 originally 301 and therefore the first MK3 body shell EMU built?
Yes it was 317301. It was misformed with a vehicle from 317325 for most of its life. The two units were rammed at Cricklewood. 317325 took 77000 from 317301 and returned to service. 77024 from 317325 was repaired and went into 317301. 77048 of 317301 was written off and a replacement constructed.

Is that something that is ongoing at the moment @Graham H or something that happened in the past, regarding 506?

Thanks

Didnt realise they had worksplates. Where do they fit them as the sides curve down at the bottom so there doesnt seem to be any traditional chassis to bolt them to

Similar construction method to the steel bodied units and Mk3 stock, though?

I find the phrase "Mk3 body / build" a little confusing - other than 5WES 442 stock, I don't personally see similarities with Mk3 coaches and the other described classes.
They're aluminium!

The body material and profile is a pretty fundamental difference though!

I actually get where you’re coming from here. Look at the roof and body profile though and you’ll see the similarities. The windows and doors on a say a Class 150 are obviously completely different to those on an HST coach, but they’re only windows and doors; underneath they’re the same (or very similar).

Just to confuse matters further, the Class 156 isn’t MK3 based, despite appearances!

Know it's off topic but 175s and 180s bear more than passing resemblance to a mk3, is that just coincidental?
