Fans of Greater Anglia’s old Class 317 electric commuter trains can take a farewell journey on them on Saturday 16 July when they are due to carry out their last scheduled trips on the network.

The Class 317 trains, which have run on the West Anglia route between Cambridge, Hertford East and London Liverpool Street for over 30 years, covering millions of miles, are being replaced with brand new state-of-the-art longer trains.

To give rail enthusiasts the chance to take a final trip on them, a pair of Class 317 trains will be scheduled to run between Hertford East and London Liverpool Street on Saturday 16 July.

They are timetabled to run as follows:

London Liverpool Street to Hertford East : 06.12, 08.12, 10.12, 12.12, 14.12, 16.12, 18.12, 20.12, 22.12

Hertford East to London Liverpool Street : 07.09, 09.09, 11.09, 13.09, 15.09, 17.09, 19.09, 21.09, 23.09

The old Class 317 trains are now primarily used for cover and contingency, rather than on a planned basis, with the last due to be withdrawn from service by the end of July.

They are being replaced by Class 720 electric trains, built by Alstom, which provide more seats, air conditioning, plug and USB points, wifi, better accessibility features, improved passenger information screens and dedicated cycle spaces.

Jonathan Denby, Greater Anglia’s Head of Corporate Affairs said: “We’re close to reaching another milestone in the roll out of our new train fleet, with the upcoming withdrawal from service of the Class 317 trains.

“We’re pleased to provide a chance for those wishing to bid farewell to these trains, which have served West Anglia passengers well for over 30 years, to take a final trip on them this Saturday.”

Can you just imagine the conditions & aromas aboard those chosen Hertford trains this weekend what with the predicted heat?

Is there a link to the statement? The Wikipedia dragons will not tolerate a brief word from Richard Clinnick as a source for updating the 317 page

Many thanks. I don’t know how to edit it, but I’m sure someone else will.

I feel rather sorry for the driver and any passengers aboard who aren’t just there for a farewell jolly!

I am planning on travelling on both of the last 317s. I'm wondering wich station will be best to catch the last southbound into Liverpool Street. I will be on the last northbound first from the street.

Back to BIS on 2S38, after an excursion down the Meridian Water "branch" on 2M35/2S36, arr. [exp] 16.25
Routed via Temple Mills loop on 2S36, a very nice touch (described over the PA as a "rail tour style route!"), reason unknown as of yet but the driver confirmed it was a rare occurrence - lucky for the 10 or so of us onboard!

It is one pair of units on a two hour repeating schedule - Liverpool Street to Hertford East and back. The 2212 from Liverpool Street to Hertford East forms the 2309 back.

I'd expect them to roster drivers that actually like them as much as possible. The Hertford trains are very busy south of Cheshunt. As well as people going to TOM or LST, there are loads making short hop local journeys on the section to Ponders End.

So is it confirmed which units are doing the last official day? I'm guessing 343 and 508?

I won’t be surprised if all the enthusiasts flock to the motor coach of 343!
I was thinking the exact same thing! Was it just a coincidence how 343 ended up being one of the final two? Arguably the loudest of the whole fleet.

And one I used to thrash into submission, like the other ones, between KGX and Cambridge or Posh.

Final scheduled day in service - 2O20 arriving at Waltham Cross this morning complete with headboard.
Nice touch from the driver over the PA announcing that this was the final day in service for the 317's.
Very low key corporate communications from Greater Anglia announcing the end. Nothing seen at stations or handouts.

Personally I don’t think Greater Anglia really care - can imagine as long as they get their new trains in service, that’s all that matters to them.

Definitely the loudest in recent years. 317344 was good too, as were most of the second series.

The station announcer at Cheshunt was very enthusiastic about them.

Let's face it, when ASDA retire and replace their checkouts do they stage a farewell?

It's only the sentimental cranks that give a shot about stuff like this.
But lets also face it - plenty of other TOCs HAVE made more of a fuss of retiring their old trains.

And trains are mightier and more complex than self service checkouts, as well as there being less trains than checkouts.

Hopefully another finds it’s way into preservation before they are all scrapped
Seems unlikely. No practical use to any preserved railway and not particularly attractive for mainline running. Suspect the driving car from 317345 will represent 317s in preservation.

Sadly so. We may see another car, but I highly doubt it; no preservation society nor Railway has been formed/ expressed interest in preserving an entire unit.
