I was on one at Heathrow Terminal 5 today and they were empty to Hayes as expected but the rear door cut in at Hayes despite their being plenty of space on the platform for it to open.

This I believe is due to the fact that the train knows what station it is in via GPS but cannot be accurate enough to know what platform it is in so Automatic Selective Door Operation (ASDO) defaults to the shortest platform restrictions. In that case cutting out the last door (restriction needed for the Hayes bay platform).

This is most noticeable around Maidenhead and Twyford where due to short main line platforms, the 4 rear doors on 9 coach units are cut out even though when on the relief lines the whole train is well in the station.

That's interesting . I could understand this being at Paddington but. I am surprised a more resilient solution isn't being used for the stations that class 345s call at such as track side beacons or other such measures platform 5 looks like it's going to be extended further when the building works are finished. The buffers are quite far down on the tracks.

On ETCS sections, all of the information is available to the train via the balises — whether the ASDO system is capable of picking up that information is something we'll discover when the system rolls out to more stations...

how to they move units between east and west sides atm?
are empty moves done via the tunnel or somewhere else like the North London line?
A movement of a unit from Old Oak Depot is currently underway.

37601 is reported to have come from Leicester to Old Oak Depot on
0D73 1200 Leicester L.I.P. to Old Oak Common East
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/44279/2020-08-07/detailed

It has coupled up to a unit at Old Oak Depot and will take it to Ilford. reversing and running round at Hanwell Bridge Loop
1802 Old Oak Depot to Ilford E.M.U.D.
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/K03030/2020-08-07/detailed

The locomotive then returns to Wembley
2126 Ilford E.M.U.D. to Wembley H.S.

A second 345 movement today from Old Oak Depot to Ilford is underway shortly. '5I17' has appeared in berth 0158 at Old Oak Depot (on the depot exit) so it would appear possible that 345017 is on the move today. My guess is that 345022 moved to Ilford yesterday since all the other west side units have been in service yesterday or today.

Seems a positive sign that a fleet of 12 7-car 345s is deemed sufficient on the west side with only Reading services to cover.

345062 is the only 345 to Heathrow today.
First day in passenger service for that one - replaced 345059 today which only did one return trip - should be two 9-car 345s on Hayes services as well - 360s remain on the other two Heathrow diagrams for the time being.

Can confirm 2 other 360s on the other 2 diagrams and 2x 345 on the Hayes rounders.

9T55 was delayed at Hayes for 12 minutes due to brake fault but on the move now.

I seem to have jumped to the wrong conclusion. 345002 reported elsewhere as being transferred to Ilford this morning. What is this for? Possible 9-car east side testing?

EDIT - confirmed as 345017 on this move as originally expected, not 345002. 345022 also confirmed as moving to Ilford on Friday.

Maybe core testing as the pudding mill lane portal is accessible.

Are any 345s in service today?
Reported elsewhere as 345062 on Heathrow, 345061/65 on Hayes, 345006/07/13/15/44/47/51/63/64 on Reading services (although four of those are currently on Old Oak / Maidenhead).

Still two 360s on the other two Heathrow diagrams.

15 345s working out of Liverpool Street as well once peak workings are included.

Apologies - I forgot to mention the Heathrow branch.
Best way to check that is to look at http://iris2.rail.co.uk/tiger/rendercissod.asp?file=302008.xml&width=full&graphic=1 and see whether there is a train formed of 9 coaches going to Heathrow Airport. Although a few trips have been missed, the 345 diagram starting with 9T07 0532 London Paddington to Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 and running every 90 minutes has been solidly run with a 345 since 30 July. 360s continue on the other two diagrams.

In other 345 news, a unit swap between Old Oak Depot and Ilford is expected today with a locomotive currently heading for Old Oak Depot from Leicester.

EDIT - looks like 345015 is the unit likely to go east.
1597134614529.png

EDIT: 345040 is reported as the unit which moved from Ilford to Old Oak Depot

Also, 345068 was reported to have run in service for one round trip from Paddington to Hayes & Harlington today. That means that 345003-17/20-22/27-30/34/35/37-40/42-44/47/49/51-66/68/70 have now been used in passenger service. I make that just 19 of the 70 units left to carry passengers.

Yes, there appear to have been numerous problems yesterday. The Hayes services that ran involved six different units, three on each diagram, with 7-cars ending up on the evening services. Three Reading units were taken out of service at various points as well. It doesn't seem to have started well today either

A quick look at Hayes services yesterday based on RTT / observations and postings elsewhere.

When there's disruption the Hayes shuttles are the first to go. This is due to concerns about signaller workload due to a points failure into Paddington which is ongoing into the higher platforms.

The 13.02 Paddington to Heathrow 5 today 17th is a nine car, 345 030.

345 059 is out as a nine car on the Hayes shuttles, xx.18 from Paddington / xx.48 from Hayes.

9-cars have worked solidly on Hayes shuttles since Monday 3 August (with the exception of Saturday 8 August and the evening of Wednesday 12 August as noted above). Still only one 9-car 345 diagram on Heathrow services and the open data feed suggests this will continue to be the case into September (although of course things can change and clearly this isn't in any way definitive).

All 7-car beyond Hayes & Harlington towards Reading - no testing appears to have occurred of 9-cars over this stretch other than the two nights in mid-July noted before. Even the 7-car units still give problems - 345007 on 9R20 0713 London Paddington to Reading picked up delay at Langley this morning causing 8 minutes delay and then was taken out of service at Burnham. It was replaced by the spare unit at Maidenhead for 9P28 0822 Reading to London Paddington and ran empty back to Old Oak Common later in the morning. The unit for 9R00 1713 London Paddington to Reading has just been taken out of service at Paddington prior to this working and gone empty to Old Oak Depot.

EDIT - the Heathrow diagram unit has also retreated to Old Oak Depot instead of working 9T03 1732 London Paddington to Heathrow Airport Terminal 5.

These 345s seem to be still messing about. I'd have expected the RLUs to be running well without issues by now but it does seem like there's faults on these units all the time.

I was on one last week that had a train fault, causing a sizable delay which can be troublesome on the GWML.

Both (unrelated) train faults. Occurring at a shocking high level.

Probably a result of all the manufacturer's engineers, who would normally be fault-fixing and improving, instead having to actually finish writing the software...

A considerable number appear to be GSMR problems or door faults.

AIUI development of the RLU software has more or less stopped, with resources being directed to the FLU software instead. I'm guessing any minor fixes will be in the FLU software rather than RLU.

RLU and FLU refer to Siemens units (Class 700/0 and 700/1), and I don't believe they're really used outside of that context.
