Class 377 light refresh

I was on a 377/1 that had been done (new low-level light by the coupler) but had not had its front lights revised (still had headlight/marker light/tail light rather than headlight/combined marker & tail light), which is interesting when there are 377/1s with both configurations.

I don't think that the main lights were ever in scope! Don't forget that it's only the first 40 377/1s (and the /3) that have the triple front lights so there's around 25 377/1s that have got the more modern light units

Unfortunately the modern-light-wearing 377/1s have the horrible 3+2 interiors on the end coaches instead of the nice table seats.

Resurrecting an old thread, but I didn't see it worth starting a new one.

I asked GTR about the state of Project Aurora and they came back with the stats on the units that have been retrofitted under the project so far.

All /1, /2, /3, /4 units have been completed, with the /6s currently underway. 377/601-602, 605-609, 611, 613-614, 616, 618-619, 621-622, 624, 626 are all complete (meaning 8 /6s to go). The /7s are yet to be touched.

I’m sure there was still one 3 car yet to be done as of a week ago but I could be wrong.

Any news as to if/when the 171s will be touched? Would be good to have plug sockets and USB chargers installed... just as long as they leave our comfy seats alone!

Pretty slow progress being made on the rest of the 5 cars it seems, but 377625 appears to be the latest to get the mods. As far as I’m aware 377617, 377620 and 377623 are still yet to be treated.

377604 has now been completed. Haven’t seen any of the others yet but surely the 377/7’s won’t get touched until 2025.

That’s not the case. The ones with the modern lights have 2+2 on the cab coaches and 3+2 on the middle coaches, plus the more modern PIS and interior styling, as per 377/4

I have to say, I do miss this font. It’s a shame it’s gone from Southern now.

Image shows 377/1 (first) and 377/4 (second) PIS respectively, both with the original Electrostar font as fitted to 357, 375, 376 and 377/1-5 from new. Southern have since changed the font on all of their 377s to match the bolder, much more slowly scrolling, font used on 377/6/7 and 387s.

No plans to bring the Connex interior 377/1s and 377/3s up to date with the full Southern interior /1 /2 and /4s? The circle style PIS, beige walls and really bright dark blue skirting all look very comparatively dated. I think it’s the beige walls more than anything. The subtle light blue on the newer units is far more contemporary.

Not unless there’s a major C6 overhaul planned that includes an internal refurbishment but I don’t think that will be forthcoming anytime soon!

Seen a post on LinkedIn that the whole Southern 377 fleet have had their project Aurora upgrades completed. 377702 was the last unit to be done. 34 extra units however were added to the scope, which accounts for all 23 Southeastern Class 377/5’s (377511 is currently being done in Selhurst) and all 9 ex C2C/GWR 387’s on Southern and Great Northern but not sure what the other 2 would be?

Have the 2 377/1s that got transferred to Southeastern been done? If not then those could possibly be the other 2.

Was 387101 done? Is it still having ETCS fitted? (I thought the ETCS first in class fitment was started before the aurora mods were done)
Yes, 101 was done before it went for ETCS fitment and testing

Am I the only one that actually likes the new font? It’s very nice on the eyes in my opinion and easier to read. I do wish it scrolled a bit quicker though

I've heard it's better/easier to read for those with dyslexia if the dot-matrix fonts are at least 2 dots thick rather than the single-width you see on a lot of screens. I'm always in favour of bold text, which means the new station name signs in RA2 do not spark joy.
