I'm not very au fait with the older EMUs, but do the refurb 442 retain the 4 step power control (Shunt, Series, Parallel and Weak Field), and the two different types of braking sysyem?

So from the looks of the photos more a heavy refresh than a refurb. Seat backs and ceiling panels appear not to have resprayed.

In their current guise, yes they do. However the plan was/is to retraction and then they'll be gone. The retraction was due to be done after all 18x5 units had been introduced in their current refreshed form then withdrawn one by one for the extra work. As the whole programme is massively behind schedisc and over budget, who knows the future plan.

With about 3 weeks to go until the new timetable, does any have confirmed diagrams for 442 workings? I know that RF user Hamworthy goods provided a good list a few months back, just wanted to see what was going to happen on 19/5? Thanks.

As there are no available sets there will be no long term diagrams in May. Aslef have refused to accept any long term diagrams with 442 work. They will instead, when eventually in service be short term plan diagrams until December.

Any particular reason why ASLEF have refused LTP diagrams?

Yes and yes - the latter being three-position with a changeover switch between auto-air and EP.

Because this is now the third set of LTP diagrams with 442s in, without one ever being in service. Putting 442 work in diagrams has led to quite a few changes to diagrams because of the limited number of crews signing them.

Many thanks to everyone. As I've been hearing that 3 or 4 10 car formations could be ready for 19/5, then this would make sense.

I was expecting 5P20 to be the 04:50 Bournemouth depot - Portsmouth Harbour to balance the diagrams.

Was told yesterday there should be 3 pairs in service from 19/5 mon - fri. Apparently need 4 pairs for new timetable so 2 less Desiro units to be under refurbishment at any time to provide capacity after 19/5. I think they are currently running with 3x444s and 4x450s in for refurb at present.

Some slight alterations/updates for you:
All alterations are part of the "6 short 442 scheme" currently in use by STP, which uses some "maintenance spares" and sometimes de-strengthens (short-forms) other services.

DIAGRAM 1 - 10 442 (currently substituted by a 10 car 444)
DIAGRAM 2 - 10 442 (currently substituted by a 12 car 450)

5P20 now does a "tour de loops" and departs Bournemouth CSD at 0451 and routes via Havant.
1P20 now departs 2 minutes earlier at 0712.

Is the tour via Havant to keep the (un)comfy seats at the London end?

Also, does 1G22 and 1G57 have an amended calling pattern come the May timetable change?

I saw a pair of 442s at Southampton recently. They were a work in progress and had seat backs but most didn’t have cushions. They do look smart in the SWR livery.

It's been seen for a while there's a path in for an 18:18 Poole-Waterloo on Sundays, calling Poole-Bournemouth-Soton Ctl-Waterloo, presumably as a glorified Bomo-Fratton move. Any word on whether this will actually drop a 442?
Similarly, any idea whether the new Sunday evening 1G9x will drop 442s?

To my knowledge the stopping patterns will remain the same so, lots of practice with SDO!

1G22 is Ports & S’sea, Fratton, Havant, Petersfield, Haslemere, Godalming, Guildford then Waterloo.
1G57 is Guildford, Godalming, Haslemere then ALL stations to Ports & S’sea from 20 May.

I thought 1G22 had Liss and Liphook in it? Or am I thinking of the 0642?

57 will be fun, but at least it’s not Farncombe, Milford and Witley.

Bournemouth don’t get away with it either, 2105 is all station from Totton onwards.

Yes that must be 1G18 the 0642 that you’re thinking of, with the Liss and Liphook calls :D

The interior looked great on South Today.

Anyone know if I can catch a service Waterloo to BSK on its first day whenever that may be !?
