Does anyone know how many standard class seats there will be on a refurbished 5-car Class 442. Will this be more/less than the number of standard seats on a refurbished 5-car Class 444.

I would imagine there will be less as the brake van itself would take up a significant number of seats.

It’s very similar. The figures are in the DfT/SWR franchise agreement:
The 442 is 336 std 32 first.
The 444 is 333 std 32 first.

Actually has ended up as 329 standard. One of the two bicycle spaces was going to be converted to 4 seats, but was abandoned thankfully!

+8 seats gained from the guard's office
+6 seats gained from the buffet area
+16 seats gained from First Class

Yes, and in fact we’ve covered all that before in the other main SWR refurb thread. I just forgot about the cancellation of the bike space conversion, I think we all thought it was a bit stupid...

Looks good. Do you know, by any chance, which peak time services on the Portsmouth Direct are due to be operated by 444s following the May timetable change? Thanks.

Looks good. Do you know, by any chance, which peak time services on the Portsmouth Direct are due to be operated by 444s following the May timetable change? Thanks.
Well, if 1600, 1700, 1730, 1830, 1930 and 2000 are 442s then I’d expect 1630, 1800 and 1900 to be 444s per franchise commitment.

I agree. And I would also assume that per their franchise agreement, the 0550 and 0643 from PMH would be 444 as well?

The 1800 off Waterloo is shown as a 12.450 in the May working notices.
The 0550 and 0643 from the harbour are both shown as 10.444.

Again, these are long term plan so may not be the reality from May 19th due to lack of available 442s.

Pompey line commuters cannot complain about seating arrangements once this becomes reality.

The 1800 is probably a fair sacrifice given the 1815 is 10-444.

...and there’ll probably be a couple more 10.442 diagrams eventually so that may well change.

Be interesting to see if they want to free up 450s or 444s for the Pompey - Bournemouth service which presumably is on the cards for December?

From what I can see we are now only missing two pm peak Pompey Line departures compared to the consultation timetables - being the opposites of the xx18 currently occupied by extra Southampton line services. Presumably if the timetable holds in May then we may see the couple of extra peak services an hour in December.

Pompey Line am services seem complete with 12 services from south of Guildford in two hours.

Yes I agree that they are nearly fulfilling their timetable consultation commitments in terms of service frequencies in the peaks - However, services are still timetabled to take far longer than initially planned.
E.g the 7:03 fast HSL-WAT service is due to take 54 mins from May 20th (an extra 3 on the timetable it is replacing).
The consultation lists fast trains as taking 47 mins! It feels as though SWR are seeking a more metro style service, though maybe this will change in due course with the improved acceleration possible from the 442s?

I don’t want to be a sourpuss but it’s bad enough that some **00 and **30 fasts are remaining 444 after we were pretty much told it’d be 100% 442 on the fasts, (yet I guess it’s not too bad a couple of 444s) but it is disgraceful that 450s will continue to do not even one but like three or four fasts when we were promised no more 3+2 on the 00/30 fasts...

Are long trains bad...?

I need to answer this carefully....

During the peaks and even shoulder peaks, they are fully justified, I also understand it’s a franchise commitment to provide a certain amount of extra seats, I also understand that splitting and attaching adds to operational risk as well as requiring additional drivers to bring units to and from the sidings.

However personally, from a selfish point of view I would much rather that capacity matched the demand throughout the day, including during very quiet periods.

The timetable change isn’t really happening yet, they are basically just adding extra trains or extending some existing trains around the usual timetable. This is a transition towards some future Big Bang. At least that’s how it seems on the Weymouth route...

I think we’re veering away from 442 now so perhaps the more general timetable stuff should be in a different thread...

Fair enough; I would rather have a huge train and not need it.

I would rather cart round fresh air, than split a service, have to path it into a siding or a yard, and find the drivers to do that!
Where else would they go? Every other line is maximum length with coaches!
No point in making them sit around, there are enough units that do that between the peaks anyways.

The modern railway in London and South East is very much moving towards this principle. The London area yards are at capacity with the additional peak services (in this case Clapham Yard) so no room for stock off trains which have been split to reduce formations. There are very tangible performance benefits in keeping trains together all day, SSWT proved this a long time ago on the main suburban. Having longer trains also helps tackle random spikes in traffic which can occur during the day and on many services off-peak and now late evening from Waterloo 5 cars just isn’t enough.

You can to some extent manage this by diagramming - if you have fixed formation 8s and 12s like Thameslink, say, you can diagram things so the 8s are all already on their way out of London and the 12s on their way in at the high peak. VTWC are very good at diagramming the 9 and 11-car Pendolinos to meet demand.

There is also the point (as you say) that there is something extremely pleasurable about travelling on an unnecessary long train off-peak with a bay each. That said, it's probably not great for the environment.

But back to 442s, aren't they required to run in pairs for reliability reasons?

That was the reasoning given by SWR, (It's in a track access application - see below) and results in them not being used on Weymouth services.
Section 5.1...
The 18 Class 442 units we are introducing in Dec 18 will be re-tractioned with the latest AC traction systems. They will operate in fixed 10-car formation to avoid performance risks from splitting and joining.

Certainly the engineering director has said that. It means that the assisting train is already on site! Certainly off peak, the plan will see 442 services interlaced with 444or 450 south of Guildford where providing assistance becomes harder and far more time consuming .

Is this goodbye to 2405 & 2424. I took these pics today at Eastleigh Arlingtons. Such a good pair of units gone to waste!!!
