Looking at the list of remaining 458/0s (458006, 458007, 458013, 458014, 458016, 458017, 458021, 458028) it's a shame that another rail tour with a pair of them couldn't have been run as a repeat of the one earlier in the year

I imagine that when the railtour was planned it was envisaged that the conversion programme would be complete a lot sooner.

Do you mean to say it didn't breakdown! :o

I think the chap on the PA had some kind of breakdown, :D he really went overboard on the local announcements about people having to keep away from the train on P4, as it was not in public use, blah blah.

Of course the auto announcements, and the PIS screens, had already done all that as it approached.

I always find it slightly disconcerting when the CIS announces to please stand clear of the platform edge, the approaching train is not scheduled to stop at this station.

Particularly so when it's at places where it's a dead end like Portsmouth Harbour or terminal platform like Hampton Court/Guildford/Shepperton!

Agree, and what's worse is that PMH also gets the regular "fast trains pass through this station without warning" every so often as well...

As 458509 was out and about on the ASDO trial yesterday, it presumably can't be long until it enters passenger service? It would be odd to use an 'untested' unit to do that sort of testing...

458526 has actually been in service for a few days, I've seen it coupled to its sister unit 525 on the Weybridge bay services.

458501 was sat outside Doncaster on Monday, I'm guessing the repairs have been complete and its waiting to come back down south?

I travelled on a couple yesterday just for the sake of it (changed sides at CJ on the way to and from Waterloo). I was hoping for a /0 on at least one leg just because I've never been on one of those either but I'll settle for the /5s I got.

They're still very shiny on the outside, particularly when modelled against the 450s but the gum coated interior was a little less fresh. A smooth ride. Smoother than the 455s just before and afterwards, anyway.

Nothing to do with the rolling stock but I did notice the aircraft style "Welcome to Waterloo" speech we got on arrival as something I'm not accustomed to. Is that normal on outer suburban stock as opposed to the inners that I normally ride?

I wouldn't hold hope if you guess the lottery numbers ;)

Miles off. Rumours are it'll be the last one out, behind the last conversion.

with the 707s coming noone seems sure of future fleet allocations though it has been suggested 458s will return to the reading route

could they be used on portsmouth to southampton stoppers? someone has suggested that as 75mph no problem

They'll be returning to Reading services to increase the Reading Line services to 10-carriages. The displaced 450s strengthen more mainline services to 12-carriages and displace 456s from Guildford-Ascot for more 10-car suburban services.

I also thought that was all public knowledge, I'm quite surprised ml thinks that 'no-one seems sure'. It's definitely been discussed earlier in this thread...

I've posted the exact thing more than once I believe, probably at least once on this very thread!

SWT also published this a while ago, which needs some reading between the lines:

The new second generation Desiro City trains being provided by Siemens are similar in style to the Class 700 units being produced for the Thameslink route.

They will be used to operate ten carriage trains on the busy Waterloo to Windsor services, allowing a cascade of trains across the network to ultimately deliver significant extra capacity on other key routes into London Waterloo. Longer trains will run from Staines through to Bracknell, Ascot and Reading and on a number of mainline services from Basingstoke to London Waterloo.

Ten carriage services will be introduced on the main suburban network for the first time, benefitting passengers travelling to stations such as Kingston, Epsom, Hampton Court and Guildford via Cobham.

http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/Pa...n order for UKs busiest commuter network.aspx

Although it doesn't expressly mention 458/5s it clearly describes how the nett result of the 707s arrival is that Reading will get longer trains, (and that's known to be a 10 car project) and 'mainline' services will be increased and lengthened. So that latter bit needs 450s, and the only realistic place to get them from is the Reading line.

SWT have stated on many occasions that the 458/5s are going back to the Reading line. You can't get more definitive than that - unless of course the platform extensions and power upgrade are ditched due to spending cuts.

Yesterday the rugby resulted in at least 10 units (5 pairs) in use:

458503+458527 on the 2V49 1707 London Waterloo to London Waterloo
458526+458533 on the 2Z20 1707 Twickenham to London Waterloo (extra)
458530+458504 on the 2R31 1245 London Waterloo to London Waterloo
458536+458535 on the 2S39 1352 London Waterloo to Weybridge (I think it was this service)
And one pair I couldn't identify.
