A friend on board 701 043 who was hoping to get the 11.33 departure from Waterloo has advised it has just become the second ever in service failure, with a door fault, after two reboot attempts taking 30 minutes.
Back on duty today, being given the chance to redeem itself.

It'll be odd seeing the 701s be repainted so early into their life if Labour do their rail plan of having everything under the same brand
I doubt if they will be repainting anything before it's due. Probably removing the text and logos, but it will be a while (if ever) before everything is the same colour.

What is the MTIN of the 345s and 710s?
Mp701D is the current term (from Modern railways) A 701D is a fault causing a specified number (that I can't recall) of delay minutes. As in this month's issue - figures for Period 11, approx figure for class 701 added:

Class 710/1 30,291
Class 720 17,978
Class 710/2 11,238

Class 195/0 7,919
Class 196 5,981
Class 345 5,650
Class 195/1 5,094
Class 197 4,699
Class 231 4,661
Class 730 3,759
Class 701 c 2,600
Class 720/6 2,580

Class 484 2,131
Class 769 1,745
Class 230 702
Class 777 645

Thanks for this. I'd say the mp701D for the 701 is entirely typical of a new train, if not a bit better. The other Aventras were all down at this level at the start, except the 345s which were worse.

It would have been interesting if we'd had such data when the 458s were first introduced. I suffered the almost daily carnage, most typically with the TMS crashing and not rebooting.

Not an entirely fair comparison, as only 1.8% of the fleet - (1 train out of the 55 accepted to date) is required to be available to maintain the service. (or even 20%, if you only count those which have been used to date)

Even that isn’t an accurate representation - not all of the units that have been used in passenger service, are currently accepted for passenger operation.

It really isn’t possible to determine failure rates for anything other than the one or two units currently in passenger use.

Sorry, what? Are you saying that at least one of the five that have been used to date, is no longer fit for service? What happened to it (them)?

One might almost feel some sympathy with DfT as the treasury seemingly won't okay the cost of the training course required which would, in time, lead to one less fleet.
That can't be correct as Treasury will end up paying for two fleets and one that costs considerably more than what its replacing.

Did they not turn it around to become the most reliable units in the UK, though?

Until they were converted to 5 cars then it all went downhill again and to this day remain SWR's most unreliable train.

The statistics are for trains that operate in service. The actual number of units in a fleet is irrelevant as far as the published data comparison goes.

I realsie that, but it is much easier to achieve if you have a large number of units to draw from to provide the service.

Indeed, although only 5 have ever appeared in service so the fleet is effectively 5 units. Or less than 5 if post #9065 is correct in that some of those units are being unaccepted.

Massive missed opportunity to make these moving maps considering they are all right by the doors unlike other Aventras. Surely wouldn't be that complicated to implement, it's already pulling destination and next stop info

Agreed. There re generally warranties on paint. Whilst they are not rail vehicles NXWM have a fleet of 64 plate Enviros which were delivered in red and white and are still in red and a mucky looking near white livery even though most other NXWM fleet are now maroon.

Considering the potential of it, the PIS system and displays leave an awful lot to be desired.

Also made worse considering they've had 5 years to get these basic things spot on.

The flaw in that, although it's true, is that the Treasury are currently not looking at the bigger picture only at the immediate outlay. A crazy way to run the country!
But the Chancellor and his boss want the potential to be able to promise (in about 3-4months time) tax cuts both before and after the election which requires not committing to a lot of spending so it doesn't appear on to the OBR "radar" for assessment.

However the public finances (and unfortunately timed one off with post office compensation and Thames Water nationalisation), and inflationary background remaining unhelpful (poor UK crops and new wind capacity coming on stream later than anticipated so gas usage is dropping as fast as expected) are having other ideas.

The incoming government is being left with a lot of currently unapproved expenditure wanting sign off shortly after they get in...

That’s exactly the problem. The hardware specification was set 5+ years ago.

Anyone know what a 701 (can’t make out which) might be doing inside the shed at Wembley intercity depot?

RTT is being coy about which unit is working the diagram today. (Because of bank Holiday and strike this is the first outing since Friday)

Also 2u29 doesn't seem to be shown on RTT, what comes into Waterloo as 2U26 (to platform 21) goes out as 2U31. Tghere is a one hour gap in departures to Windsor between 1103 and 1203. Is this something to do with the overtime ban?

AFAIK the diagram is not a 701 this week due to the overtime ban.

Assuming 701 trainings have begun or will begin for Drivers, how many of those Drivers actually stay and learn the new units?

Whilst not similar, I do remember when the A stock was being replaced by the S stock, a lot of the old boys called it a day as it would for them I believe change the way they've worked for years plus the relearning of new things. The 455s and 442s to 701s I assume driving wise must be quite a change.
