Why do TVMs print tickets after the date of ticket validity has expired?

I printed a ticket last week from a Virgin TVM 8 days after the date of the Advance ticket validity. Surely the Ticket should have been cancelled after say a couple of days of non collection?

8 days, a couple of days, one day.... What's the difference, if the ticket is unusable anyway?

You might need them for a refund if you weren't able to travel and you didn't get a chance to pick them up until later on.

You might get an excess online before the date of travel to let you travel on another day, for example.

The ToD system is not very complicated, with IT systems like this they are built to a certain specification and once you get more complicated than that for no reason you could come up with more issues than you solve, so unless someone finds a compelling reason things like that will not be written into the specification.

You may have changed the date of travel but still need the original tickets.

You can’t change the date of Advance tickets without having the original tickets?

If you don't need them, don't collect them. Having them available for anyone who does need them must surely be useful though? Better than them not being available regardless.

Why did YOU do this? If you’re suggesting they shouldn’t do this what was your reasoning for doing it which led you to finding this out?

I was just testing a thought that they shouldn’t print out so far after thier validity had expired. As th3 value was less than the £10 changing date fee I wasn’t interested in actually printing them before the original date of Travel which had changed anyway
