Passing through Derby station this evening I noticed several Cross Country cancellations on the boards.
One was the 19.45 to York, also the 21.27 to York. There was also a Birmingham cancelled, I couldn't memorise the full details.

Does anyone know the reasons?

According to Real Time Trains, the 1945 to York (ex-1525 from Plymouth) was terminated at Birmingham due to a train crew issue.

The 2127 to York (ex-1746 from Southampton) was cancelled throughout due to the late arrival of the inbound service.

There are currently no Birmingham services which are being shown as cancelled, but the 1708 Edinburgh to Birmingham is currently running twenty minutes late.

Allegedly Leeds drivers rather upset at the suspension of one of their colleagues so declining RDW etc. That was the murmur anyway...

1V54 Dundee to Newquay was CAPED at Edinburgh due to a defective windscreen wiper on power car 43301. Restarted Newcastle as 1Z54 with a Voyager.

How heavily reliant are XC on their drivers working rest days then? Doesn't seem like a reliable system to have in place.

Yet the good old BBC Travel were stating delays were due to "problems with lineside equipment." Finding no reported incidents attributable to Network Rail it seems that once again a TOC is being economical with the truth... :-x

In the week this is normal practice, as it forms 1M76 1935 Newcastle to Birmingham, but on Saturday's I'd have thought it would continue straight up to Dundee (or Edinburgh at least), being a busy day.

A lot of TOCs are just the same.

It is a very poor practice to allow this situation to continue. Has no-one learnt the lessons of the London Midland franchise cancellations week after week because of insufficient drivers - it could have cost them their franchise.

It's lousy for passengers to have the disruption that this level of cancellations brings.

It's not fair on all the people who are looking for work to hear TOCS refusing to recruit when there is a clear need. There are lots of people looking for jobs as drivers in the industry - as evidenced by this message board.

It can't be good for safety either, to have drivers regularly working their rest days.

It simply should not be allowed to continue.

They have atleast a 12 hour break between shifts which is plenty enough. I don't have any concerns with the safety of it, just seems a tad unreliable for a company to rely on drivers working their days off.

Do the TOC's incur any sort of penalty for these cancellations?

Yes. (Even if they manage to replace part of the service with a hot spare.)
Apart from when the TOC disputes every litle delay attributed to a particular incident...as though they are trying to get out of accepting the blame.

A case in point from Saturday afternoon. A unit fails with an unspecified technical problem resulting in a number of services cancelled. TOC still disputes the cancellations blaming Network Rail; even though they eventually admit that the unit did have a defective radio - causing it to be taken out of service.
