Yes, if you re take the Psychometric Tests, the new result overrides the previous one and therefore if you fail then at that point you will no longer hold a pass. There may be a small chance that DB may not recheck the result but if they did and you had failed then I think you’d be out. It’s risky but depends how much you prefer passenger to freight, they are much different job roles and the training for each I’d imagine is very different too.

Hi everyone, does anyone know what course dates they have for Warrington. I’ve recently passed my OPC assessments and waiting for a date for my depot interview? I’m not sure how long DB take to arrange these interviews. Thanks

Hi Guys

Brand new on here. Have applied for the trainee driver role at Barking as an external candidate.

Passed my assessments in Doncaster in August and DMI a few weeks ago. Things seemed very positive, just the gruelling wait for a medical (hopefully) and then a start date.

Congrats to all on here who have secured their places and good luck to the rest of us.

Thank you to all who have contributed to the forum as it really helps keeping expectations realistic and morale positive!!
How long did you wait to find out you'd passed the DMI? Mine was almost 4 weeks ago and I've heard nothing since just wondering if this is standard procedure or I should just cut my losses and move on

4 weeks is nothing to hear back, maybe drop a polite email if you have heard nothing by November.

I’d say it’s a bit of a grey area, as if you’ve been offered a job pending medical (and most pass the medical), you’re technically a driver and so the psychometric assessments may not be considered. That’s not to say I’d want to risk it :D.

Also, I believe when you apply for your ETDL (for me it was about halfway through classroom training this was applied for, I assume so you don’t have to wait once qualified for a licence) the psychometric assessment passes are checked by the ORR, so if one did slip through the net, it would probably be picked up at this stage and bounced back to the TOC/FOC (it’s very easy to dismiss someone if they’ve been at an organisation for under 2 years too…).

It’s a position I found myself in when I went to GWR. My psychometric passes were dotted about everywhere, and SWR would only accept passes for 3 years. I decided not to take what I needed to again with them, even though it was easier if I got the job to stay at the same TOC, because if I failed, I’d be back to square one (GWR accept the passes for 5 years so I was straight to interview with them).

i have done the same and cancelled the assessment day. I don't need to take the risk with the medical coming up.
It is for junior driver role but im happy to learn the tricks of the trade and work my way into a full Train driving role.

Probably wise. I applied for JD a few years ago but they pulled the job in the end. It worked out well in the end, but JD is a good stepping stone definitely, plus you’ll have the psychometric assessments under your belt and shouldn’t need to retake them for mainline. At DB it’s also a recognised progression I believe.

I'm still waiting to see if I have passed the DMI.

It did all seem positive and a few good indicators of being progressed but I'm still waiting to be contacted for a medical.

Keeping my hopes up as it still says 'in process' on the careers portal.

Hi All a quick question,

i have a medical booked for a Junior Driver role with DB cargo.

I have also just been invited to Train driver assessments with Transport for wales because they only accept 2 years and my passes are 3 years ago.

Do you think if i were to fail the assessments with Transport for wales it could have an impact on my Junior driver role with DB cargo or with the medical booked do i no longer need to worry about that.

Hope that makes sense.
Tough one. Truth is I don’t know! I speak to drivers a lot and they say to apply for loads however my personal opinion is if a situation like yours arises I’d stick with the one till it is no more but then I’ve not been faced with that situation. Hard to judge till you’re actually in it. Medicals are a good sign though. Best of luck you pass it and best of luck with whatever decision you chose bud

I passed mine in November 2021 and didn’t get given an April 2022 start date until the March, but it varies all over the place

Well, I failed my medical (temp unfit) - I am gutted, thankfully, my current employer still -after taking into my account my physical activity - thinks I am fit to do my safety critical job, rather than discount me out of hand based on BMI.

Ladies, never play rugby, never do predominantly labour-intensive, physical work for 20 years, never take up kickboxing, marathon/endurance walking or be proud to leg press 300kg on the regular.

I thought you’d been given a start date?

I was.

Thankfully, I didn't hand in my notice until I had a contract in my hand (they don't issue the contract without the medical results).

I am a bit crestfallen, because when I had the call I was successful, I was asked to be patient, and as it was my first choice out of the jobs I went for, I had withdrawn myself out of the running for other opportunities.

Ah well, it's all a learning experience.

Oh I see, and I’m very sorry to hear this news as it is such a long process and so many hurdles to clear that being told this at the finishing line must be heartbreaking!

I'm sorry to read this. I see you put 'temp unfit' so I hope that the door is still open for you in the (not-too-distant) future.

300kg! I doff my cap

I hope so too, but other than shed my muscle and bone mass, I am not sure what I can do.

Everything was absolutely fine - when the GP asked me to squeeze his fingers as hards as I could (even though I told him I would rather not, for his own safety), he insisted - I cracked all of his knuckles, the only thing that they took exception with was my weight, based on BMI.

I am only slightly bigger than the UK average, the women's uniforms are available in about 5 sizes bigger than me, I am at an utter loss.

That's really crap, it sounds like you're a lot fitter than the majority of experienced drivers out there too... What is the BMI limit by the way? I'm currently looking for a career change and this could potentially affect me too..

Oh my gosh I’m so sorry!! That’s awful to go off BMI! It’s such an outdated thing now because everyone is different. You’re fit and healthy! I don’t understand! Hopefully with it being temp means you will still get a place soon!

I’d be asking for a send opinion. My BMI was assessed as obese, I’m 5’9” and 87kg with a 32 inch waist. But because I go to the gym and climb I’m definitely not fat. The nurse said it doesn’t take muscle in to consideration.

It’s such a load of old balls is BMI. Quite a few years ago I used to do quite a lot of weight training and could about see a six pack, so not carrying much fat, bmi showed me as obese, almost morbidly obese! Such a nonsense scale used as rough guide. Any body working in a medical environment should have the knowledge and skills to look at body typing, fat percentages and overall health more than a height and weight chart.

I agree with Carl about the second opinion, as other people on here have done with heart irregularities, I’d get a decent medical report as it sounds like you would pass. Don’t settle for a job loss due to BMI.

Sorry to hear that, i had a nervous wait with my medical, as i take Anticoagulation which the doctor needed looking into before signing off, fortunately i was signed off as fit.

it's such a long process failing a medical is hard to accept and take.

I wonder what the Bmi threshold is as if they made that clear prior to a medical many could work on getting it below the threshold.

It's not really fair failing with Bmi as this is something that can be worked on very quickly if need be.

Hey fellow lady driver :) - any tips about the interview you can give? I have one coming up next week.
Well hello there! Nice to know more women!! Congrats on an interview! I’m assuming you did your assessment day? If so, the biggest tip I can give you is be yourself and research the company and just know different facts and figures if you can. I did this and the guy at the interview was impressed because I taught him things he didn’t know about the company! So definitely look into it. The obvious of why you want to work for the company and why you want to be a driver. Also just think of different scenarios where you’d had to challenge bad practice, where you’ve had to concentrate for extended periods of time, when you organised events, worked under pressure etc. Just think about them and how you dealt with them and how they relate to the role of a train driver. Just really think about your answers. Definitely prep and practice! It will help! :D
