I know that a lot of people like 'proper' locos like 56's, but lets be realistic here.

Yes I know drivers generally liked them, and they were good haulers, but at what cost?

I always seemed to stink of diesel whenever I got off one! Not a favourite of mine.

Incidentally someone else asked about the general condition of the 56's. Those at Crewe Diesel Depot look in a very poor state externally.

Instead of preserving these locos maybe all class 56 preservation groups should concentrate on buying component parts from these locos and keep the existing preservation fleet operational.

The Fertis ones look a bit better than the rest, though faded and with some rust. I'd hate to think what they are like inside however.

The class 56s were introduced around what, 1976 to to early 80's was it? Only remember because 1976 was the year I joined British Rail! That makes the oldest one 35 years old (and me considerably older unfortunately). They were not the most reliable even when in their prime, a pain to repair (particularly the exhaust system) and are long in the tooth. Why would a freight company use 56s when there are far more cost effective locos available? Yes I know drivers generally liked them, and they were good haulers, but at what cost?

Preserving one or two is one thing, but adding all the modern safety systems (TPWS GSM-R etc) and getting them up to speed mechanically is just not a realistic aspiration for day-to-day mail line operations.

Quite a bit of passenger stock that is newer than the 56s has been scrapped, why should freight haulage be thought of in different terms to passenger stock?

"What a Waste?" I don't think so.

Let the flaming commence!! :p

The waste is that they were withdrawn so soon. Many of these must have been in store for close on a decade. If you take the working life of a loco as being 40 years, then they fulfilled barely half of that. Let's not forget that some of us are still driving HST's about, and they have a heck of a lot in common with 56's. however, I would agree that widespread reinstatement from their present condition is an unrealistic aspiration.

When I received the email from DBS I discovered this,
35 S10198 0-4-0
Rolls-Royce Sentinel Orb Works

What is it?

Also, I have heard that 56006 was an EWS Heritage Machine, what else was?
What else could be placed on a tender soon, 58s in Britain, 60s, more 08s or 90s?
And is there anywhere I can find what other tender lists have been revealed by DBS/EWS before?
If I had enough money, I would have to pick from 47799, 56006, 018, 046 and 103-106

Thanks, Sam

EDIT: Who is likely to want these?

I weighed some copper pipe in the other week (my own) and it was £4650 a ton.I know the cable price is different but probably not much in it.
