Was just wondering how many people have been decapitated and/or lost limbs/digits by doing heads out.

Bloke lost his head in Conway Tunnel whilst filming a Steam Engine in the opposite direction.

I was just wondering. Cause there's been a couple of times on HSTs where we're going over 100mph, and there's a train coming the opposite way doing over 100mph, and it just made me think, if we just around a corner or something, then I would never have seen it coming and my head would have been straight off!
I've never read about any railway decapitation incidents before though, so thought I'd ask here :p

Surely you would have to have your head so far out of the window for your head to whacked off by another train.

Yeah, true. Which I guess I probably didn't, but still. Scary thought.
I bet theres a fair few flailers that are missing arms though.

Why would anyone be stupid enough to stick any part of thier body out of a window of a train travelling above 100mph?

I've had a near miss or two from me being a bit of an idiot when I was a bit younger, not really close enough to threaten the head/neck relationship, but close enough for me to learn a lesson about situational awareness.

If you stick your head out on the 'cess' side you'll quite likely get it whacked hard by a tree - they don't cut them back like they used to. And some of those branches are quite substantial.

Also, there is the suction effect - not the line about 3ft back from platform edges where high speed trains go through, so you can be almost sucked out the window by a passing 2+9 HST easily....

Hi,
On 125 mph mainlines there should be 10 feet between up & down lines, so unless you are 10' & 1/4 in height you should be OK!! The real problem is on the off side where some lineside structures, bridges and tunnels, even trees and branches may not be as far as you think. On lines below 125 tracks may be just 6' foot apart and at large stations complexes even closer.

However, saying that, I repeat the question already asked "Why would anyone want to lean out so far on a moving train"? You would need to be brain dead, or a moronic head-banger or something.

I once had three mindless morons climb on top of my DMU between Slough and Ivor. They would have gone farther had not someone on an overbridge point at my train as I approached. I couldn't believe when looking back from the cab, to see three youngsters on the centre coach roof. These sort of brainless idot are the reason why we must never reduce the driving age any further, for cars or trains. Even when confronted they couldn't remove the smirk from their faces as they were just too mindless to know the danger they were in and the affact they would have had on me, as the driver, if they had been serious hurt or killed.

If anyone reading this thinks that was a 'Cool' thing to do, you want to try attending a Coroner's court when as the driver you have to face the parents who have just sat through listening to what happened to their child and what the injuries were. And that goes for suicides too.

Enjoy your hobby by all means but don't go doing anything stupid.

Cheers.

I imagine the signal box at Lichfield Trent Valley could be a bit of a shock to anybody shoving their head out on the other side (before the Pendo's of course).

I always stick my head out at every chance i get and i have been close but it's them idiots that do some kinda sign language stuff with there arms, if it's ment to mean anything, when i was on a tour at christmas someone if front of me was doing all this business with there arms when a voyager was coming the other way the driver tooted and he just got it in before the voyager passed and i'm thinking what a total idiot, when hardly anyone knows what this arm business is meant to mean. Does anybody know what this stuff means?

Flailing is normal on a railtour. You come to expect and ignore it if you do tours enough times.

Fortunatly I know where my limit is in regards to headsout and speed, and what routes are too dangerous to do (out of the ones I've been over).

Of course, when you've got the space of 2 tracks between yourself in the second coach of a Class 40 tour and loads of photters on the opposite platform at Beaconsfield then I just can't resist a flail .

Dawlish sea wall is ace too, especially behind 2x50 or Western Champion!

Check out our own son of the bubblecar Keeper MR Parkstone Ned or 960012 for short Flailing out one of the last 442's to leave Poole in February of this year.

To be honest, I think it just looks silly. I dont do it on trains, although I have had a close encounter with a 33/1 by sticking me noggin out of the train window between Reading & Oxford once!!. Sticking ones head out of a train window at 125 mph is exhilarating expereince been there done it lost the glasses got a few bugs on the face and a rather pale complexion to boot!!! But it was fun.

Actually I though most of the head amputees would have had the skulls smashed hitting a pot or solid imovable object say at 70mph.... Bit like a juicy bug squat but say a tad bigger!!!

 (quick wheres the bucket!!)

Everyone knows there's no suchh thing as the suction effect. :P

Most tunnels and bidges have loads of room, if something will hit you it's gonna be a tree.
