I'm sure he was trying to be helpful, but people aren't as outgoing in Europe as they are in Australia. It would have likely been a case of wondering why he was involving himself in other people's business. Telling people what to do if they're not staff doesn't go down well.

Also, it may have been perfectly safe, European loading gauges are quite big compared to passenger vehicles, you'd have to lean a long way out to clout anything.

Also if you think the UK is hot on H&S try Oz. Many of the laws (e.g. you can barely do any of your own electrics) are downright protectionist.

It tends to vary. The fact you can walk between the carriages of two former driving cars on V Sets, for example, seems like a death trap waiting to happen.

Imagine walking through that at 70mph. I’ve stood adjacent to that gangway and the way it bounces, I don’t know how no one’s been hurtled out. People do walk through it. I saw them countless times, not at top speed mind you.

Delay, definitely.

Currently in Italy. FR9583 now 90 minutes late due to trespassers.

My only significant delay recently in Switzerland was due to trespassers too.

Slight difference between Trenitalia and GB: 7 long distance trains heavily delayed but regionals truncated instead.
I've just had 5 days in Switzerland, travelling extensively by train - around 18 hours travel, excluding heritage lines. I heard a train horn sounded only once and apparently it's a rare occurrence. We were east of Lausanne alongside Lake Geneva and I noticed three or four people at the track side, apparently having come out of the lake. The train didn't slow down so I assume the warning sounded complied with regulations. There's no lineside fencing of course except where landowners have put up their own, and no yellow lines on platforms. There was a complete absence of safety and security announcements on trains and stations, but there were signs at Brussels Midi warning of pick-pockets!

Today was a first time for me to actually hear safety announcements in a Dutch train. In the steam trains for Dordt in Stoom an announcement was made the funny way: "don't lean out the windows too far, there are signs along the tracks and those are hard".
