And yet nothing from GWR whatever so far. Nor Greater Anglia, amongst others.

SWR say they are 'not planning to reduce their service' according to NR - good luck with that :-/
Got people coming up from Gloucester on Friday, (1014) have just suggested that they come tomorrow instead. (albeit in the early evening), as said there is nothing on the GWR site about Friday, so it seems too risky to wait

Western Region: 50mph blanket speed on Friday 18th February 2022 from 04:00 – 19:00 across the Western Route.

It has been rather windy here in St Albans, and the ground is sodden after a couple of days of rain, so not surprised trees / wires are down.

it’s going to be a busy Friday too.

We don't need the Tory Scarecrow telling us that it's too dangerous to go outside. We can make our own minds up ourselves.

Lets not make this political. This has the potential to be a once in a few decades storm. Anything done to encourage the public to use their brains must be a good thing.

The electricity to the overhead wires has been switched off between Bedford and London St Pancras (not sure if it’s the entirety of said route) due to safety reasons.
Not going to be easy to repair with the dangerously strong winds either.

Storm Eunice already has Amber Warnings in place, but looking at the Warning impact matrix at the moment, it's possible that some areas may see that upgraded to a Red warning if likelihood increases, with some places seeing 100mph gusts possible. The most likely places for this appear to be the Southwest and the west coast of Wales:

I think it is all but certain this close in. The only question remains over the tracking imo and I suspect once identified with a higher degree of accuracy the red warning(s) will follow. Potentially it could drift south through the channel but it seems that is looking highly unlikely now.

Preston station platforms 5, 6 and 7 are all blocked off I see. Could this be due to the wind?

Been browsing around the various coastal forecasts and Swanage has the highest gust forecast so far, with 96mph. Plymouth has 89mph. Dawlish is lower at 62mph so far but is probably down to how the coast is shaped there relative to the SW wind forecast, but would still be a tough test for the defence reinforcement work so far (obviously not really ideal while they're still working on other parts of the route).

Looks like there may now be a problem between Oxenholme and Penrith. From RTT, TransPennine 1S81 was terminated at Oxenholme at 18:48. TransPennine 1M92, having been cancelled between Glasgow and Carlisle, duly set off from Carlisle but hasn't reported since leaving Penrith at 19:03. Could be stuck on Shap or turned back to Carlisle?

A code black (do not travel) has been issued at Luton due to a tree on the line at St Albans which is on fire. All electricity between Bedford and London is switched off.

There are a few stranded trains including EMR 1F60, which was stuck at Harpenden, was sent two blocks forward to rescue the passengers of TL 9V50

Blowing wild here on the Tendring Peninsula in Essex, every village around me is showing up as having power cuts, lights flickering. And this is the weaker one.

My thoughts are with the staff who will be risking their own safety to help passengers who ignored the "do not travel" warnings.

When this happened a few years ago with the Cambridge London daytrippers I mentioned upthread, because of the overcrowding some staff weren't able to board a train to take them in, so ended up turning round and going home. Divine justice would have the self-same daytrippers then stuck on a train with no one to help rescue them, I don't think that happened but many were stuck at King's Cross for the way home as I recall.

Some people do seem incapable of predicting potential consequences arising from their actions.

Nothing seems to have headed south from Bristol for about an hour at least now?

You do realize some people might have no choice but to travel. People still have to get to work etc or they won't get paid. I know I'd love to work for a company that'd tell me not to come in in bad weather and still pay me but it's never going to happen. Have a think about that before you just blatantly accuse people of "ignoring" things.

Latest from EMR is lines closed for the rest of this evening.

Given that today is the much less severe of the two storms this week, it doesn’t bode well for Friday

I don't have any issue with people travelling for work, especially those in the more essential roles.

But anyone will tell you that there will be *lots* of people travelling for reasons which are far less important. Some real-world examples:
* We have a ticket booked for X and don't want to lose our money
* We're going shopping
* It's half term week and we're not missing out on our day out to London
* I want to go to the beach to see what a storm looks like
* We're going away for the weekend

Tree on the line in the Keighley area. Gusts haven’t been that strong today, however, it shows you that it isn’t just strong winds which can blow trees over.

The saturated ground is almost certainly a contributor to this. Friday will be ‘interesting’ shall we say…View attachment 110303
Shallow rooted very tall leylandii possibly planted on an embankment. I was alongside the Leeds - Keighley line about 4.30 this afternoon and there were some extreme gusts which were rocking the car.

Looks like there is a tree on the line in the Nailsea area. Once again this is a stretch of line not even in the current warning area so it does not bode well for Friday.

From GWR Journey Check:

Cancellations to services between Parson Street and Nailsea & Backwell

Due to a tree blocking the railway between Parson Street and Nailsea & Backwell the line towards Taunton is blocked.
Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Disruption is expected until 20:30 16/02.
Further Information

If you hold a valid single, return, or weekly ticket, you will be able to claim compensation for delays of 15 minutes or more. Please keep your ticket and visit GWR.com/DelayRepay

Yes, because my wife is one of them. She has a contingency plan to stay in London if the service falls over.

Having worked on the railway I can tell you that there will be people who expect their train, on time, with all the usual facilities even if they've read the warnings.

Yes we were power off for a while (CO7) and it came back at what seemed low voltage after about 10 mins, went off again 5 mins later, then back after another 5 at full power, been ok since..............

According to RTT 1M16, 1540 ex Glasgow Central had passed Beattock 221 mins late. I should have been on that, but took an earlier train - just in case!

Getting rough again here, nothing too major thankfully but I am not looking forward to going out there in around 8 hours' time. For work, and yes I am one of those who won't have the option not to go in because of the weather.

Good luck to those further north, and indeed to all of those who are in areas affected by the current disruption :)

According to Traksy, 1M92 is still shown occupying the up platform berth at Penrith at 2030.

And now on the move at 2035 south with no trains in front of it until Preston!

It seems to have reversed at Beattock and to be going back to Glasgow now.

1M17 1640 Glasgow -Euston seems to have got as far as Carstairs where it was 40L and has gone back to Glasgow, arriving back there over 2 hours after it first departed.

Wires down near Beattock. The Shieldmuir to Warrington Royal Mail train has also crossed over at Beattock to return north. ScotRail will be feeling a tad smug at having got most of their trains in Central and Southern Scotland tucked up in bed for an early night (even though they don't operate in the Beattock area).
