This all might be a red herring there may be something else to it, but it appears a platform mix up might be responsible here.
I don't think there's any 'might' about it being a platform mix up. The 18:13 LM train to Birmingham is recorded as leaving Platform 2 at 1813¼, the OP said (s)he was standing on Platform 2 while a LM train departed to Birmingham - when they looked at the clock it said 1813 and 37 seconds. Sounds pretty conclusive to me.

I think it is fair to say that an error was made by the OP in this particular case and it would probably be best to take the £50 on the chin. It seems likely from his account that he saw the departure information for the 1813 and ran for that, and of course by the time he got back to the concourse, the departure information for the 1816 would have disappeared off the board too. We all make mistakes unfortunately and last time a mistake cost me £59.

I did not see this thread until today. Can I remind everyone that contribution in this area of the forum should be strictly on topic. If anyone wishes to discuss any side issue then you are requested to do so in a separate thread.

Since the query from the OP appears resolved, this thread is locked.

A copy of the RTT list of the relevant departures for that day is attached.

A closing word from the OP.

I would like to thank you all for the advice you have given.
Firstly I have discovered a new tool, RTT website which is very helpful and for helping me discover my fault in my journey.

I fully accept I made a mistake in seeing the first train to Birmingham as the one I required, not even considering there may be another one timed so close. In my defence I was rushed, stressed by the London rat race (a major contributing factor to my relocation away from the city) and still upset from the previous day.

I will write directly to LM to recede my complaint and furthermore offer deepest apologies for the misunderstanding on my part.

Thank you all again for your sound advice.
Yours,
VampArmand
