Didn't realise lodging turns still existed for drivers, wonder if they make it worth their while ?

Very few left, I believe that on passenger work east coast Inverness and, if they still have it, the Sunderland crew for GC lodging at kings cross are the only 2 left. May be a couple more but they arnt very common.

Watched the first episode of the FGW programme last night, apart from a few 'is it a HST, is it a 180?' moments, the difference was chalk and cheese. Much more educational as opposed to 'he's funny, stick a camera on him'.

The continuity is a joke. It was especially noticeable to me on the Highland section - at one point the view out of the window was from a southbound service!

XC recently advertised a driver position which required the need for drivers to lodge occasionally.

The series has definately grown on me. The fact that it‘s becoming a bit more technical helps - seeing maintenance workers gingerly tackle the overhead line was an interesting moment.

I've just watched 10 episodes over Christmas and enjoyed them all.

I'd just like to make it clear that trainspotter Ian at York and Doncaster to spot 60009 Union of South Africa is most definitely not me!

I appeared on the episode with the Sunderland fans heading north. I wasn't among them, but was in the background at KX, waiting on the same train. Oh joy to be on TV, not!

I gave up after the first tedious episode. Any chance that someone could edit all the technical/engineering/operations bits into one youtube clip? I wonder how long that clip would be...

I think YouTube has a minimum length, so uploading just 1 frame probably wouldn't work.

There's been a lot of criticism of the series and I agree with some of it, but I do appreciate the aerial and line-side filming (even though it's somewhat 'random' at times); and having never been north of Edinburgh it's encouraged me to plan a trip to Aberdeen.

I was interested to note that when I looked at the on-demand webpage a few days ago it said that eps 5, 7, 8, and 9 were available - but ep 6 was missing. I wondered if this was for legal reasons - was this the episode with 'the guy at the ticket machine' in it? (If so, best not to discuss this further, as there may be 'proceedings' going on!)

The aerial filming was probably done in one day and is simple used over and over. Besides probably not even being in the right place, it has often shown an HST or Mk4 when the footage inside is then of the other.

Not that I'd suggest they could do things any different, unless they had a helicopter follow every train they were filming on which would cost a fortune and be pretty pointless for 99.5% of viewers.

I doubt it's because of that. If legal proceedings were ongoing against the gentleman I'd have hoped they would have been sensible enough not to show it in the first place.

This series has now run its course. It's getting so repetitive and Richard Wilson's voice is so so nausiating at the best of times. Surely there can't be much more to this lot.

FGW was much more interesting.

I stopped watching before Christmas.

What did I miss?

I stopped after the football episode. Might watch them eventually but no real plan too. Most of the people on my Facebook have also stopped.

I don't know how people can still watch it now. At least the FGW show was actually factual and was actually really good towards the end - speaking of which I've heard there will be another series on FGW.

Not sure they could manage another series on FGW, and a second series might not be quite as good. Perhaps they should do another TOC instead?

I'd like to see one about, say, FCC instead. A very busy London service with all the problems that go with it. Rather like watching the shows about the tube.

With so much work going on in the run up to the TSGN franchise, there would be scope to talk about the infrastructure upgrades and perhaps explain to the general public (in simple terms) what is actually needed to improve services, and that it's more than just building new trains.

Still a documentary for Joe Public, but one that would really be of interest to the millions of commuters.

No disrespect to the Information Controller chappy at Newcastle Central, i'm sure he's a conscientious and hard working fellow... However i got the impression from his irreverent grin the other evening at Newcastle - as we departed - he was more interested in smiling at sleepy and some disgruntled passengers as if to say 'i am the bloke off the telly...'

Did he care that the train was running 4 hours late? I would like to hope so, but i'm not so sure...
