I suppose so. I've heard no news about those 153's for a long time.
Anyway back on topic, I think these 360's will look good with a good refurb and lick of paint.

Hello, Are some 321s covering the normal booked class 360s service to Clacton & Ipswich during daytime?

It was 360116, video on YT confirms with readable numbers. Only one car of it went to Kilmarnock and that was for a repair to a minor bump, came back a while ago,
Yes for example the 11:05 ex Clacton on a weekday used to be 4 x 360 when I’ve seen it recently it’s been 8 x 321. Yesterday the service seemed to be almost exclusively 321 operated including the Norwich’s which were terminating at Ipswich due to engineering works. That said as Clacton was blocked also due to engineering work many 360s May have been tucked up in bed there.

360116 went back to Ilford yesterday and 360113 came up to Northampton today. 47727 & 47739 providing the power this week

Are there any external changes for spotters to observe to identify the upgraded units, from my back garden they all look the same!
Depends how good you are at spot the difference! The only external mods are horns, windscreen wipers, headlights and pantograph.
Checking flickr for before & after images, the only differences I've been able to spot are slightly smaller horns, two washer pipes on the wipers rather than one, and a slightly sleeker pantograph head without 'lugs' at the bottom of the horns. Can't spot a difference between the headlights, it may just be the case that it's a brighter bulb

You mean either side of the coupler? Those are the horns

Also don't know if it has been mentioned already but the overhead wires between Bedford and Corby were officialy energised in august. https://twitter.com/13milepost/status/1297481999855345664
As another point the overhead wires south of Bedford can only handle speeds of up to 100mph. So when the 360s enter service they will probably be limited to 100mph until the overhead wires can be modified to withstand higher speeds.

Also the 360's will run in formations of 8 coaches during off peak times and 12 coaches during peak times.

With the current reduced demand for trains in service, maybe they can do the interior refurbishment more quickly?

I doubt it. The reduction in demand at the moment is offset by each passenger needing more space (for social distancing) so the units will probably still be required.
