Five and six according to the report (the first two coaches of the middle unit). It also reports that the fifth coach had been in a previous collision in 1958, although undamaged as it was at the rear of a train that ran into another one.
5484 was involved in quite a serious derailment at Borough Market junction in it original formation/number. Various carriages at precarious angles but no serious injuries.

According to the group magazine, the EPB preservation group is hoping to get 5759 out on the Bromley North branch on a Sunday next year. So we might get to sample one under its own power again.
Would anyone know the groups website as it would be amazing to see it out?

Agreed!

Assuming it happens, would this be the first time a slam door EMU has carried passengers on the main line since 2005 (or 2010 if you include the Lymington branch)?

To my knowledge, yes.
Might explain why the Hastings  DEMU has been popular - a Southern Region "slammer", even if no arcing third rail shoe! :D

You do get plenty of thumping though! :D

It would be great to have a SR “slammer” carrying passengers on the network under its own power again. It would actually be quite an achievement, especially being an EPB as opposed to a class that ran more recently (albeit still a long time ago).

Will the unit need to be fitted with central door locking to run on the Bromley North branch? And/or any other safety equipment?

AFAIK and based on my sightings and photo of the HDL 9-car set - it's not a prerequisite for CDL as the HDL vehicles do not have it. Same potentially applies to the EPB.

I miss the EPBs' creaks and oscillations. I admit I took them for granted; and then they had gone. I am grateful for riding in 5001, on the seminal Emerald Water Witch mini-tour.

That is not correct. The Hastings unit (or units now!) has CDL. The full details are here: https://www.hastingsdiesels.co.uk/news/articles/2005a02/

It is also a mandatory requirement for any additional vehicles being re-registered for passenger use on the main line. See the WCRC fiasco for what happens if you want to run without CDL after any exemption expires.

It would be a good plandampf if it happens (I would certainly visit).

Given the self-contained nature and relatively low speed of the Bromley North line, I wonder if it could operate under light rail regulations temporarily.

That pretty much stymies anything with suburban stock quantities of doors (unless a derogation can be obtained for running at Light Railway speeds on a “one engine in steam” basis - eg Bromley North). Somehow I doubt it would be forthcoming.

That's useful insight, thanks. I have looked again on my April photo and the CDL lights are very discreet.

Incorrect… again! If you look at the link I posted, the door release lights are there.

Compare the CDL lenses on this photo, with the size of the orange square CDL lenses on aircon heritage stock.
The DEMU ones are discreet, n'est pas?

Anyway, we are veering away from EPBs. :)

I never knew that EPBs were kettles…!

An electric plandampf !

Although strictly speaking, the thumpers do have electro pneumatic breaking, so maybe not too off topic !

It doesn't; the VEP 3417 will be out on the main line - what they're doing with that one is only fitting a few doors with CDL and keeping the rest fully locked. That method has been approved, so no reason it wouldn't be granted for anything similar.

Of course that only works for open carriages... not anything with full width compartments in...

Sadly I was born two months before their withdrawal, so I know nothing of these great trains. I grew up on Networkers and will always remember asking my Mum what that noise was as the GEC inverters fired into life as we left Brixton on my first trip on one. Still, I’d definitely be up for a trip on one down the Bromley North branch.

I love 24toHayes videos. I wonder if he’s on these forums

There's only a few compartments on a 2EPB so that should not be a deal breaker. If all else fails, lock them out of use until time and funds allow CDL to be fitted to those doors.
