Ex LM 321 TSO's to be scrapped

Apologies if mentioned elsewhere, but I couldn't find any existing threads on this topic
According to the RAIL Magazine, the 7 Class 321 TSO's (71959-71966) which were removed from 321411-417 are to be scrapped.

My personal opinion on this is that Eversholt could have at least retained these TSO's as spares in case anything happened to its BREL MK3 stock (318/320/321/455) since the last vehicle they kept spare (67301) was sold to Porterbrook and is now in 455 913. Alternatively, they could have been used in the first 7 455/7's enabling the old 508 TSO's to be scrapped instead.

I imagine any spares will be taken from these vehicles before they're scrapped. They may possible have had a use as extending some class 455s to 5 car for SWT's 10 car suburban railway, however I don't know how much this would affect the acceleration, or if it'd be worth it for the hassle of creating a microfleet of 7 units.

Why most people in the know seem to think whoever wins the SWT franchise will replace the 455's, there will be loads of spare 321's in a few years, I wouldn't be surprised to see the W Midlands franchise take new trains in preference to the Siemens units which maybe spare other than maybe the 350/4.

So let the scrapping begin, and bad news for the oh you carn't scrap that, you can get another 60 years of use out of that brigade.

I'm not sure there'd be much to gain in replacing the 508 trailers in the 455/7s. There are more 455/7s than there are spare TSOs, so you'd be creating yet another variation in the SWT fleet. They'd need a fair bit spent on them to bring them up to SWT standards too. Additionally as the 508 cars are aluminium rather than steel there'd be weight differences too, along with the differences in when and where corrosion issues crop up in the two different types. The only real advantage would be a more consistent look to the units, which isn't worth the cost.

I can see the argument for retaining a few shells as spares, but given the large numbers of mk3-based EMUs that will soon be going off-lease, there's unlikely to be a shortage of donors in the unlikely event of a single vehicle being written off.

I'm not why this would be the case because theyre (Class 455s) currently being put through a re-tractioning programme. So that would suggest that theyre being re-tractioned for.. nothing?

We've been through it on the relevant discussions, the retractioning came about as part of the Class 707 order and would not have been done otherwise.

I think the imminent abundance of 2nd Generation EMU stock, some of which will be DDA compliant, has led to this.

The 321s are nearing their 30th birthdays, a few will be around when they're 40 I'm sure but I can't see the point of keeping coaches that will sit and rust just in case they're needed in the short term. Once the 319s have found new homes, there will a small batch of 317s and 60-odd 315s available from TfL for a short term fix.

Mount Ford engines under them, couple them between a 442 set to provide power for the traction motors and a Pacer driving car to provide a driving trailer on the other end and you have a perfectly reconditioned, Bimode EMU perfect for the Waterloo - Exeter runs. Splendid!

Probably easier to double up a pair of 150s (or make 3-car sets by putting a 150/2 vehicle in the middle of two halves of 150/1) and build a D-319 to go with them, to be honest.

Sad though it is when things get scrapped, there's going to be a glut of Mk3-based EMUs on the market soon...

Why did ScotRail remove them? Would the 321s have been to long for the route(s) they are used on had the TSOs been left in place?

Glasgow suburban services via the "low level" lines work on a basis of 3/6-car formations. 4-car units would be too long to double up with other units.
