why is it that (most) germans would kill themselves rather than drop litter whereas the some of the UK population are happy to live in a pigsty?

Often it's due to a lack of provision of bins.

This leads to people dumping garbage on the deck which has a knock on affect on others reluctance to replicate the littering.

Most "normal" people will keep a tidy area tidy :p

Dropping litter down drains does not magically make it disappear. It costs the water companies to filter and dispose of it and you can be sure that this cost is passed back to the customers. Whether it costs more or less than it costs for the council to empty bins is another matter.

Because this country is the laziest in the civilised world IMO

We built an Empire then rested on it. (then lost it all!!)
We got educated and thought we were too good to be bus conductors and toilet attendants, and sat back and let others do the work. Trouble was, others didn't want to do it either, so we had to cry out to the Empire for people who would.
Without being racist, of course poorly paid people from a bulging population and lessening job prospects (talking specifically of the West Indies and Africa), living in tin sheds or mud huts would jump at the chance of a regular wage, food in their bellies and a study brick built/ prefab house to live in.
The British working man stereotypically does 9-5 (and in the 70's, 7-12 on a Sunday, if you were a newsagent) then shuts up. Nobody could get an evening newspaper, loaf of bread, packet of tabs, pint of milk after 5pm. Members of the Empire from the east, who would prefer to see their families better off rather than own the latest gadgets answered this call and the corner shop became more popular, with shopkeepers more than willing to stay open till 9 or 10pm
As another long running saga of a topic in another part of this forum is saying, we're now too snobbish to think about doing cleaning jobs or other menial tasks, so where are we going to get these people from to do these jobs?? seems Eastern Europe is the place this time, now that our borders are free to traverse for those in the EU.

Fall over- send for your solicitor, instead of looking out for yourself and being responsible for what you do, again, someone else's responsibility

I have a friend who, as an area manager, drives all over the north of England for his job. However, that's where his knowledge of a car ends, he doesn't know how to top up his oil or water. He needed a battery and got one from another mate who is a mechanic, not only did the other mate have to deliver it, but he also had to fit it. Ignorance and laziness in action.

Lets face it, there's a majority of the population of the UK who are just lazy bas****s and deserve to live in the s**t they've created for themselves, it's just a shame for the people who do care who have to live alongside them.

As long as they have the attitude that 'it'll create work for someone' then you'll never get it through to them, never have clean streets and people from other countries will always look at us as a bunch of scruffs.

I fly regularly and find the differeing levels of security check a real inconvenience for example the scanners and checks at Schiphol are far greater in some respects than at UK airports, yet Brussels seem less so.

BHX always pulls my wheeled laptop case apart on a regular basis and strips my camera down, whereas Schiphol are happy with things taken out.

I can back this up, my mother won an umbrella in a raffle at a dog show in Germany (golf umbrella sized)
German security at the airport, no problem, let her on the plane with it as hand luggage, we get to Heathrow and the connecting flight to Newcastle, BA jobsworth says 'no way, no chance, never' being to big to put into hold baggage, she had no option to leave it. I think she said that BA would allow her to apply to have it sent to her for a charge of £25.
She doesn't have the umbrella!

Before we get too down on ourselves, let us not forget how filthy some other (particularly Mediterranean) countries are. It's just a different culture; just do some things differently, you may think they are better or you may think they are worse.

That's very true especially in what was "Eastern Europe"

In addition to rubbish a lot of these towns/cities have lot's of stray mutts running wild in the streets.

The poor hounds are shot in some countries - no RSPCA

Italy is appalling for litter. And graffiti. Every single suburban train I got was coated in dreadful graffiti inside and out, with etchings on the windows. Roman ruins also suffered badly - The Forum and the Palatine were two places I saw graffiti. I was horrified, but as you say, the attitude towards such things in other countries is somewhat different to our own.
