You can only go on from what you see and this was an international level match where you expect the highest standards from the players.
Hannah Hampton juggled one chest-high cross, and stayed down injured after she enventually fell onto the ball. I couldn't help but think the 'injury' was to mask the mistake.
She's good with her feet, probably a female version of Pickford or Ter-Stegen. If the manager wants a ball playing GK then Hampton may keep the shirt. However, I prefer out-and-out shot-stoppers and that is where Earps excels for me.

My grand-daughter aged 10 and my son visited me and she wanted to watch the Women's match between England and Sweden. Mary Earps was not in goal for England and her replacement was the worst woman goalkeeper that I have ever seen. The match ended goal-less.
My wife was annoyed because it meant there was no Emmerdale that evening.

Was there any real need for Spanish players to go poloticking when celebrating the win on Sunday by singing 'Gibraltar is Spanish'?
It isn't, so don't worry about it. It is like the Argentinians going on about the Falklands being theirs. They aren't. Don't stress it.

I think some of it was a response to the English fans chanting Gibraltar is British. Its done in jest.

As opposed to what Argentina have been doing which is just bizarre on many levels.

Our (Stockton Town FC) fixtures have just been released. I shall hopefully bump into @Xenophon PCDGS when we play Hyde at their ground on August 24th. Our first 'proper' season game is on the 10th August just over 3 weeks away so seems to be quite short notice for getting fixtures out.

Is there bad blood between Argentina and France? I can't understand why they would involve themselves in such a thing.
Mbappe has gone on record as saying that European football was of a much higher standard than South American. Can't remember the actual quote but it was words that said as much !

Emery has only beaten him once in European football which isn't exactly schooled when he's lost twice to Klopp.
Beat him in a final
Simeone and him have both lost and won twice respectively, again not schooled.
The last meeting in the UCL just before covid very much was.
Gasparini again also won twice and lost twice against Klopp, not exactly a schooling either, especially by aggregate.
He hammered him 3 0, how would you describe it ?
Zidane he lost twice and drew once and that 2018 was still abit into him building his team and not exactly a schooling either.

Oh give over, 3 -1 and 3 -1 is a serious defeat however you want to dress it up.
Only person on that list that you could class as schooling him was Carlo.

His record in finals is terrible, he's played 5 european finals and lost 4, so if we're looking for someone to take us to the next step he quite clearly isn't the man.

I don't really follow english club football so can't comment on his finals record here.

That's before we take into account the impact on SGP and the coaching pathway of appointing a foreign manager. If we are going down that route then get Carlo.

I'll remind you of what you actually said....

Which is still wrong.
Dress it up anyway you want the guy's a serial loser when it counts.

when they hear it, even though some of their songs are far more aggressive (Scotland looking at you <D ).

As originally recorded by the Folk group "The Corries" Flower of Scotland" was a lament. You have to listen to the full song to understand the full meaning of the song. The chorus which is normally sung is about the Battle of Bannockburn, a successful defensive action against an invading English army, hardly aggressive. Let's not forget the original full version of the UK anthem, blessing General Wade and all that.

How many Sunderland fans are expected at the friendly this coming Sat in Blackpool - ie. those travelling by train for the day? Thinking my lot are playing at Squires Gate down the road, and I don't fancy the Manchester-Blackpool train (especially if only three carriages) if it's packed with football fans and families with prams, kids all over the place etc. Might go Bolton to Blackpool N or S via Blackburn to avoid.

I doubt there will be too many but on a summer Saturday the trains to Blackpool will be packed anyway, especially if Northern are playing the cancellation game.

Sunderland have been allocated 5,300 tickets (!!) and have apparently sold between 2,500 and 3,000 of them (!!!!)

Rodri & Alvaro Morata have been charged by UEFA after chanting in the celebrations after Spain winning the Euros that Gibraltar is Spanish. Gibraltar took offence to this chanting & reported it to UEFA.

Yikes! Most will go by coach or stay over, but a good number will be on the trains and some hope to get tickets on the day. Blackburn it is then!

Two more pre-season friendlies played by Hyde United, but these were against lower-level clubs.....
Saturday, 20th July...Away at Longridge Town (North West Counties League...Premier Division). Won 3-0
Tuesday, 23rd July....Home to AFC Mossley (Northern Premier League...Division One North). Won 2-0.

Two more of these pre-season matches still to play, against teams of a higher calibre than those faced in the last two matches.....
Saturday, 27th July... Away at Stalybridge Celtic.
Saturday, 3rd August... Away to Marine.

Don't Stalybridge Celtic currently play in the same division as near neighbours Mossley? (= NPL West?)

I must have overlooked the last two season's relegations from the Northern Premier League...Premier Division, as I am sure that Hyde played them not so long ago and was one of the "local Tameside derbies". It was always a good test of both sides.

Bury FC, of the North West Counties League (step 9) have been drawn to play Gilla in the FENIX Trophy, two-legs. Gilla play in...Helsinki! It's a pan-European trophy for "Phoenix" clubs, of which followers of FCUM will be aquainted with.

So there you have it, how to get into Europe, go bust, reform, drop six divisions and hey-ho!!

It isn't for phoenix clubs, as FCUM wouldn't be eligible along with a number of other competing teams. It is, apparently, for clubs with "exceptional social, historical and cultural distinctiveness". Nonetheless, it is recognised by UEFA, so certainly has some status. As well as Bury, competing clubs include FC United of Manchester and Walton & Hersham from England, Scottish side Caledonian Braves and Welsh side Llantwit Major. The full draw is:

FC United of Manchester (ENG) v Prague Raptors (CZE)
Llantwit Major (WAL) v KS Berchem (BEL)
FC Miljakovac (SER) v KP Bor (POL)
Bury (ENG) v Gilla (FIN)
Walton & Hersham (ENG) v FC Oslo (NWY)
Caledonian Braves (SCO) v Venus Bucharest (ROM)
Fans United (MNE) v Brera (ITA)
Athletic Sonnenberg (GER) v BK Skjold (DEN)

So Milton Kenyes Dons don't really count then??!

Pre-season friendly

Stalybridge Celtic 1 ... Hyde United 4

Stalybridge took the lead after only 5 minutes, but then conceded an own-goal a minute later. Hyde took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. In the second half, Hyde added more goals in the 58th and 71st minutes.

Hyde will face a far harder task next Saturday when they play Marine at home.

Busy day in Blackpool with Hearts (at Fleetwood) Sunderland (at Blackpool) and Bury (at Squires Gate) and the latter wasn't a friendly but the first NWCL fixture and finished 4 - 4, full house, all tickets sold, gate around 1000 but will have to check the actual figure when available.

After beating Manchester City 4-3 last week, Celtic concluded their pre-season tour of the USA by beating Chelsea 4-1 at the Notre Dame Stadium in Indiana. For all that it was a pre-season fixture, Chelsea still had about £700m worth of signings on the pitch, so Celtic will take great heart from a fine performance. The season proper begins next week and, with the tribute act in yet more self-inflicted disarray, we can't wait to get started!

Good use of “signings” rather than “talent”
Exactly right, the CFC fan chat saying it’s only friendlies but it’s these games that give the opportunity to gel even though a few such as Palmer not back yet. I hope my team doesn’t look to Palmer again for sole creativity.

Silva carried the back line past couple of seasons, great player who no longer had the legs but had a knack for reading the game.

Only a few with real talent like Palmer, Gusto, Caceido…..too many injury prone in the squad & yet another manager to start his own process.

It pains me to say it but I wouldn’t be shocked come January to see Southgate in situ under the current ownership, I really hope Maresca can get a tune out of this lot & get to stabilise the club on the pitch.

Motherwell 0-0 Partick Thistle (Partick Win on Penalties) Sunday 28th July 2024

In a match that Thistle needed to win to advance to the Scotish League Cup 2nd Round, Motherwell hold on to a draw with a meaningless penalty shoot-out taking afterwords.

The big talk of the day was that Partick Thistle weren't allowed to bring on a striker in the 85th minute as he wasn't on the fourth officials team sheet :?:. After the match it turns out that the fourth official took a screenshot of a app but forgot to make sure that there wasn't any players on the next page. And that was exactly where Partick Thistle striker Ricco Diack was! Partick Thistle manager Kris Doolan suggested going back to traditional way of pen and paper after the match. Partick Thistle will appeal but I doubt we will get any compensation for the absolute mess of a situation.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking on Tuesday when asked about the England managers job:

"Absolutely no contact whatsoever from anybody - and I'm fully committed to Newcastle," said Howe when asked about England during Newcastle's pre-season trip to Japan.

That's it then. Eddie Howe new England manager.

Raith Rovers manager Ian Murray has been sacked after just 1 league game, citing poor match results as the reason despite the fact that they made the Scottish Premiership Playoff final last season:?:

But apparently they tailed off quite badly in the second half of last season.

The nearly man of the lower Scottish Leagues. Nearly got Airdrie promoted from Div 1, nearly got Raith Rovers promoted from the Championship. The man that replaced him at Airdrie turned out to be his Nemesis! He actually never won an Airdrie v Raith match, losing 5 as Airdrie Manager and 5 as Raith Manager with two draws

Honestly if you are going to replace the manager do it at the end of the season not after one game of the new season.
